Iguana Inteligance
this is a debate. keep it civil. we are debating on what the topic is. i personally feel that they are very intelligent. i cant give any real life examples since i dont know any, but i know Yoda, and Nicoles Cyclura most likey have some stories. and anyone else who has an opinion can state it.

Re: Iguana Inteligance
well i do not know about iguanas but i have a monitor that comes when called and I am teaching our new one to do the same. The savanna also answers to a clicker. Another learning reptile in our house is our retic. We have taught her going back into her cage gets her food, she picked it up very quickly.

But those are /learned/ behaviors. I am not saying igs are not intelligent, just that they aren't /that/ intelligent..

Re: Iguana Inteligance
i think the point razeraze is getting at is that they are smart enough to learn what different things mean.

Re: Iguana Inteligance
The point is there is a fine line between instinctive and learned behavior, with instinct driving the learning (treat training).
There is no concrete evidence why crocodiles eat rocks, some suggest to aid in digestion, others to help stay submerged but the fact is crocodiles are eating them for a reason and delibertly even if we do not know why.
Crocodiles have frontal lobes and are IMO the smartest reptiles but lizards are second runner up. Just because we may not know why they do things does not mean they don't. Self preservation and self medication is a more natural behavior than responding to a clicker. I believe lithophagy and geophagy are as important in reptiles as it is in birds and mammals.

iguanas, along with most lizards dont detect belly heat well. that is how a lot of burns happen. and i know this is a completely different species, but look at monkeys. they eat each others poop to gain nutrients...iguanas are not stupid. if they feel they are not getting enough nutrients, and they think they found a source for some, they are going to take advantage of it

According to Nick's posts, he feeds a pretty varied and well rounded diet. Do you mean to tell me you believe his ig tasted the dirt, and thought, "Aye, Carumba!! this is what I have been missing"?
