Cypress for Iguanas?
Anyone ever use cypress substrate for their Green iguana?
Or hear anything negative about using it. I realize they taste their environment, so I didn't know if ingestion would be a factor?
It's time to change my igs substrate, and I don't like the appearance of newspaper, really..Plus I need some more humidity, and I hate the coconut fiber, it gets in their little eyes, then they use their feet to rub it off, and get MORE in their eyes..very irritating.

Re: Cypress for Iguanas?
aspen isnt a good subtrate. a good subtrate to use is called the "ultimate substrate" which James Hatfield(iguana expert/author of "The Ultimate Green Iguana Manual". what it is a few pieces of newspaper stacked on each other, then about 3 or 4 papertowels taped on top of that. that will absorb all the "moisture" from their poop. and is durable enough to handle a light misting to get the humidity up

Re: Cypress for Iguanas?
Indoor outdoor carpet! Get 5 or so peices cut to size and just change/wash them once soiled. I use to use them in an old cage for Yoda he loved the stuff and it felt/looked very cumfy!

Re: Cypress for Iguanas?
I wouldn't put anything in there that may harm them if they swallow it. They are very curious and constantly taste stuff.
What is your setup and how large is the iguana?

Re: Cypress for Iguanas?
Its the little green ig I have..He's about 5" and in an approx. 4ft x 4ft x 3ft cage
I've got 2 cinderblocks stacked with another across the top to provide a stable basking spot, and several branches.
he has 2 water bowls one up around his basking area, and one on the floor.

Re: Cypress for Iguanas?
What did you decide on as substrate? I use newspaper but I cover it with natural leaves (dried) or dried grass, which works for me because I live in the tropics and their cage is on the patio. You might have to watch for mildew, or try the stuff that Nick suggested.
