Hey guys my younger daughter grabbed my older daughter's Iggy by the tail and it came off!!!
I need to know how to stop the bleeding(Can I use styptic powder?) and I know that some lizards will "drop" their tails if they are in danger....Is this true for Iggy's? Also wll it grow back?
This happened a few minutes ago....the tail is still moving due to nerves so I need to know what to do in order to get her through this with out losing her......She is a small ig also
Please HELP

I'm not an expert on Iggys by any strech of the imagination, but their tail will not grow back and they do not drop their tail in the case of an attack. Usually an Iguana will use their tail to "persuade" an attacker to leave them alone.
I don't know about styptic powder, but I can't imagine it would hurt your Iguana. I would try to put direct pressure on the wound and have someone else hold her head (Iggy bites can be VERY nasty).
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

yeh I read a thread about an incident like this recently.. Apply pressure to stop the bleeding, def hold the head away from your hand. After that make sure to clean it and put some Neosporin on there to try an stop infection. Keep a close eye on it an keep applyin neosporin to fight off infection..
You can think Lori for this help, i think i juss quoted her word for word from another thread, haha
Sorry this happened 2 ya Iggy heather!

I have seen some regeneration of tails. Its not like it was originally but its not uncommon at all. Yes Neosporin on the broken spot will do the trick.

Well the thing is is that the wound doesn't look like it was ripped....it is "a clean break" it looks as if she did "drop her tail" and it isn't bleeding like I would think that it would if it was ripped off.......I guess what happened exactly was when she went to take off from my younger kid all she got ahold of was the tail and it came off.....I aleady have neosporin on it

I think they can drop their tail like other lizards but I am not 100% sure, I have seen several iguanas that has lost thier tails. The tails do grow back but nothing like it's original condition. Lori can clarify this matter. She deals with them all the time.

Neosporin non pain and a substrate change to newsprint.
Iggys tails can and do drop off, they also regrow although ugly as crsp in most cases.
At lesat it broke clean intead of hanging by a thread of skin, or just a break without skinn breakage.

Actually they do have the ability to drop their tail off when needed. Most lose their tail due to "attack" or an accident though and not from just dropping it. the tail does regrow also. Like someone said it does not look anything like the original tail either..as in most lizard tail regrowth cases tend to be anyway.
YUP.. Some pressure and neosporin is about all you can do for it at this point. Just watch it for infection and make sure that it is actually a clean break off also. if there is any sign of infection.. VET ASAP ! Infection can lead to gangrene in the tail which will work it's way upward etc and cause major health issues for the iggy.
NOTE : The tail regrowth can take a loooong time also. On occasion the tail will not regrow either, but most do.

Thanks Lori....as usual you are awesome!......Yeah it was a clean break, the majority of the nerve endings were on the tail and they were perfectly even in length and it hardly bled so i put some neo on it and she seems to be doing fine considering!

thanx NP tx
How's it doing now ? shopuld have no bleed at this point either and should get looking better also. The end will look a bit "rough" for awhile possibly..just keep cage really clean and the tail dry and all to avoid infection.
