I have a 10 yra old iguana Jade she has just had her tail removed about 3feet of it. She is about 6 feet long. I think it rotted and it beagn to split open and ooze. It deterirated over time so I decided to get it taken off. Vets around here really donot know what to do so I was reluctant but i did it. Now she won't eat, her tail is stiff and she doesn't move much. It has been about 1 month. It has not started to even look like ti will grow back. BUT NOW her mouth is inflammed and bleeding and her gums are coming out the sides!! I think it is mouth rot, the vets know nothing. I was wondering what can I do? How fo I help her? Is bleding the latter stages of mouth rot, is this a cowinsendence with having the tail removed? She does have Metabolic
BD and has almost her whole life. You name it She has had the problem and I have always done the research myself and nursed her back. She is well taken care of I have evrything proper in her cage and her diet is correct. I noticed after the surgery she is also opening her mouth alot and seemed to have trouble with her throat? I am running out of answers and I NEED HELP PLEASE I don't want her to die!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for contacting us. I would advise you to get your iguana to a QUALIFIED reptile veterinarian immediately, even if you have to drive out of town. This animal could be in terrible pain. Nothing anyone over the Internet can do. please get the medical care needed to address the suffering of the animal.
You said that the cage and diet are proper for the iguanas needs but there may be some issue here that caused some of this. A properly caged iguana would not have metabolic bone disease or the other problems you described.
Also,
I suggest your next step is to get involved with an online reptile community like
www.redtailboa.net. It is free to join and you can chat online with many other Iguana owners who can help you learn and enjoy your pet.
May I post your e-mail in their forum so others may advise?
If you let us know what city and state you live in we may be able to get you to a good vet.

Yes you can post it, she has developed MBD earlt in her life and she was having too much calcium but once she had it it does not go away, U can get it under control but not get rid of it. Ontario, Canada
This is from the vets. Jade has a problem with over-mineralization of the tail vertibrae. This leads to soft tissue injuries which ultimately results in the need to amputate the end of the tail. This may be caused by too much Vitamin D too much calicium in the diet, or overactive parathyroid glands. Most likely the parathyroid glands are contributing to this problem. I do not suspect that Jade's condition is due to diet alone. Recommendations: Feed good variety of plant materials only, Do not give any calcium or viatimn supplemants for now. Syringe feed soft food if jade does not eat on her own. Jade also has mild stomatitis, antibiotics should take care of this. Continue treatment with that. Bring Jade back in 2-3 weeks unless fatal otherwise. She weighs 2.7kg
Please let me know what U think of what the vets has to say, Thanks Jade and Alicia

I will send U pictures of her if U like!
THANKS
