Cage Type

I'm thinking of getting a Green Iguana. Would the Chamelion type screen cage work, or do they need the metal screen cage?

Hi CC Welcome to RTB.

I can't imagine any animal NEEDING metal screen The cloth screen stuff will do fine and even allow a bit more humidity and a LOT less nose rubbage. BTW please consider adopting. There is no reptile on the planet flooding the rescues more than unwanted iguanas.

Actually the cloth mesh cages are really not that great of an idea, as Nicole pointed out they block about 80% of the UVB rays from entering the enclosure. It turn out they use the same material for sunshades, to purposly block the suns rays. As i hope you know UVB is Vital to the health an wellbeing of an Iggy.

Like Brett said Please adopt. Don't let a pet store make money on the poor little babies. Also when you see a full grown adult, maybe you will change your mind about getting one. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do your homework before you deside to get one.

From the look of your other posts youve never kept a reptile before, an iguana is NOT a good first reptile.

http://redtailboa.net/index.php?name...wtopic&t=16837

You may want to just read that post alone to get yourself not to get one. Not many people can handle iguanas, you sound pretty young too so id avoid iguanas as much as you can. If you want a good first lizard get a bearded dragon or leopard gecko. I dont mean any offence if you arent young.

A green iguana, while very inexpensive to get is agreed in most circles to be an experienced herpers venture. It is not a cute little pet---it will change and just how much is yet to be seen. You can do everything right--spoil it until the cows come home and if you let you're guard down for an extended period of time while it's a baby---you will have major problems later when it's an adult.
Look on this website under IGUANAS (the forum) and read all the recent posts---including the photos of the stitches and bites and ask yourself if you really want something like this in your home.
If you really can't be swayed...here are the pros and cons for adult V baby:

CONS for getting a baby iguana:

1) an iguana can grow into a lizard you barely recognize. An adult iguana is a better idea because any rescue worth it's salt will fill you in the ig's temperament and history.
2) Sexing is virtually impossible so you might end up with a male. Male= UNEXPECTED behavioral problems later....this can happen all in a few seconds.
3) Baby Size is the worst possible preparation for what you will need later
4) Most are wild caught because they are so cheap to import....parasite problems. Vet bills.

PROS to getting an adult rescue:

1) Many health problems have been addressed and most at least identified.
2) Temperaments have been established.
3) Size is absolute--get one cage
4) Sometimes cages come with rescues
5)Also like Brett said you will be giving an Ig a home ( I would definately adopt if I wanted a green iguana--if you read anything on the net at all you see just how many homeless Igs there are).

Hope this helped....I still say buy a tegu
Think big and controlable with caging--it's a tough combo.

I think somebody mentioned about being able to adobt an Iguana and most of the people will put there pets as well as there enclosures up for adoption as well. Here is a good adoption agency which does a real good job on trying to find good homes for there animals(as well as enclosures) and has people trying to find good home for there lizards all accross the states. Throughout most of the adds I have seen, I could say a good percentage includes the enclosure along with the animal.

http://members2.boardhost.com/gisadoptions/

Really worth looking at if you plan on owning an Iguana.

It's a shame really because Iguanas are beautiful lizards.
I happen to love the way they look. Bottom line is I guess I have read too many horror stories....if the day comes when I change my mind I will definately get an adult for all the reasons I listed here.
It's better for you as the owner and better for the animal who needs a good home
