Well, let me start by saying that I love my snakes.

BUT I have been out of work for a while, and buying rats and snakes has been getting very expensive.
I DO NOT want to give up my babies, so I have been wondering about "alternatives" to their usual prey items.

Obviously, it has to be something close in size and shape to what their used to, so it can't be macaroni salad or potato chips -- but what about hot dogs, or those little "snausages" they give to small dogs??

I was thinking instead of rats, how about F/T Hot Pockets?? Of course, not the Pepperoni Pizza Variety, but maybe Cheeseburger Hot Pockets would work...PLUS I like 'em too, so thats even more economical, right?

If I could make a mold, Jello might work if I added very little water...
or a cheese log, or a salami?

What about tater tots (cooked of course)??

Any other ideas???

Hey, I've been there..
Here's some tips for good emergency eating.

Hot dogs, since this is a relatively cheap item, are the easiest to use.
Use ballpark franks, they make nice plump snakies when the bask on the hot side.
As for hot pockets, they are ok if thawed in a tub of warm olive oil to slightly warmer than room temp. Snakes do looooove the pepperoni pockets! I saw a family of racers in the market buying them just this evening.
For a special treat, ya just can'ty beat Ben & Jerrys Rocky Road ice cream. It gives them something to squeeze on before they eat.
My snakes prefer Jenny Craig. Not the food, but her.
Since you all like the same things, forget all you ever heard about water!
Keep plenty of beer on hand for the little rascals, it will keep them active and trim much like it does armchair quarterbacks.

Wait, wouldn't feeding a snake Jenny Craig food make it too skinny? Better feed it some high-fat McD's - their hamburgers, when cut into thirds, look snakelicious!

My housemate, at first aghast at the idea of killing mice herself for her python, figured out a solution: dress them up like college English professors. It's SO much easier to break their neck then...

And for dessert, how about rodent flavored ice cream molden into the shape of a pinkie?

Ah yes McD's. Make sure you go on Wednesday though to get the .29C burgers though. Then you feed thme fresh and freeze the rest of them, then just thaw as needed. Of course this is all if you can afford the burgers, I sometimes can't. Like last week for example, I bought a new reptile, didn't even have a cage he is still in a shoe box. It was also feeding time so I just borrowed the neighbors cat. Last summer I hit the Jack pot when I found an entire litter of kittens. Eddie is right about the water, but most beers give my snakes the heart burn. I found that a nice 5th works great, perfect shape to swallow also. Just put a small hole in the top of the cap and give it to em, the samples work great for the smaller snakes too.

Well Burgers are good but id get worried the snake would get bound up. I would recomend if you do go that route to go to White Castle for the mini bugers(lovingly known here as SLIDERS) Taco Bells 49cent bean buritos do nicely too.
