Man, talk about a rude awakening! Sorry, never seen them before at my end. I had the usual normal black ones from a purchase several months ago. Used Provent a Mite on the enclosure and problem was solved. Good luck in the extermination of these pesty critters.

OMG, the only way to find out for sure what kind they are is to TASTE them! If they taste kind of grapey and they pop in your mouth, then it sounds like you've got the dreaded North American Poprock mite! The best way to get rid of them is to eat them all. Best of luck to you man.

Im gonna take a guess here and say this:
Chiggers are different from other mites, in that they feed on humans and other animals only in the larval stage. The adults and nymphs feed on vegetable matter, insect eggs, and other insects.
While difficult to see individually, the are often visible in groups on plant leaves as very, very tiny red bugs (hence the name "Red Bug" that's also applied to the chigger mite.)
When humans come in contact with infested grass or other vegetation, the chigger larvae get onto the skin and travel until they meet an obstacle like a waistband. At this point, they attach to the skin and begin to feed.
After feeding for three to four days, the larvae drop off the body to continue their growth cycle. When feeding, the larvae secrete a fluid that causes intense itching.
Within twenty-four hours of attachment, a reddened area up to one inch in diameter will appear, which may be accompanied by a blister. Continued itching is usually due to a delayed sensitivity reaction which may persist for several weeks.

Ahh, so you're not actually messing with us here? In that case, I don't know what's going on with whatever these purple things are.

Back up top.
Any one have any luck on these nasty things yet?
They are spreading QUICKLY! Even to other rooms at a phenomenal rate!
And I AM using good cleaning habits when I am going from one set up to the next!
I even put seven dust down as a barrier on the carpet to limit the spread, but NO GOOD!
They seem to crave the dust like it is a treat and keep on marching right through it.................
