Anybody ever have the food escape? Well, Friday night I brought a chicken home from work and left it in the cage, by my back door. I get them from a guy at work whose Dad raises them. Anyway, I went out after dark to get it and saw that the cage was wide open! Dang! I loaded up the cage, after I fixed the broken latch, into the car and drove all over town looking for it. I gave up and went home, thinking he was probably roosting somewhere or that maybe an animal got it. I got up Saturday morning and walked around the neighborhood to see if I could spot it. No such luck! So, I get in the car and drive around town again. No chicken. We live in a really small town that has one grocery store and one convenience store. I stopped at both places and asked if anyone had come in saying that they had seen a chicken walking around town. After they were done with the strange looks and laughter I was told that "no haven't heard anything like that" I'm on a first name basis with most people in town so they knew what the chicken was for. Frustrated, I went back home, had some lunch, then laid down on the sofa for a little nap. About an hour later, my Daughter comes in yelling that the chicken was in the neighbors yard! I jumped up and ran outside where my son and daughter wer already chasing the thing around the neighbors yard. I joined them and we chased it for about ten minutes before it ran into a culvert the went under the hiway. After throwing pebbles at it for awhile trying to coax it out the other end- Did I mention it was raining like mad the whole time we were chasing it- We gave up and I went in and called a friend that has a golden lab. Five minute later he showed up with his dog. The dog goes in the culvert and one minute later, swims out the other end with a dead chicken in his mouth. I am happy to say that the stinking chicken is where I wanted it to go in the first place. Monti's belly. Maybe it wouldhave just been easier to go buy another chicken! Oh yeah and another thing....what buisness is it of yours if he feeds it a chicken. At least he is feeding it. Do you have to clean up the mess? NO Do you live there? NO. It was a simple post to tell his story and you gotta try and turn it around and make it out as he is a bad guy GOOD GREIF

AND I just aksed why he fed fowel..I didn't mean it in a critisizing way, I was just curious if the "mess" was as bad as I have heard it was. Look, if you've got a problem with something I say, take it up with me in private. That's one of the many benefits of the IM'er. I've apologised once, and deleted my post, what else would you like?
I don't really appreciate you insinuating that I was trying to make him look like a bad guy either...especially since that's what you did to me...
See? people misread and misinterpret messages, as you have obviously done with mine. SO, lets try and be a bit more...erm...tolerant of eachother, okay?

Look man im sorry for going off but I just get tired of certain people trying to make the "newbies" look like idiots. It makes me so mad to know that somebody else has got to put somebody else down cause they think they know more. Again I aplogize.

It's fine. Like I said, messages can often be misinterpreted..no big deal.
I however, was not attempting to put him down, or make him look like an idiot...

Hey you guys, take it easy. I may be a newbie here, but I been takin care of my burms for many years. Capn., I didn't get online in time to see your post but I think I get the gist of it. I only feed prekilled or f/t to my snakes. Can you imagine the damage a chicken could cause to a snake. they gots some nasty big claws. As far as the mess goes, it's not bad at all with my male burm. he was on chickens when I first got him. When I switched him to bunnies it was really messy for a while. Now he has a variety with me feeding rats, rabbits and chickens to him without much difference at the other end. I think that it's just a matter of getting them used to it. the females that I picked up a while back don't seem to have much problem with different food items either. Besides, when ya love yer snakes, ya jest have to put up with a little extra crap once in a while!! Geez, from the gist of this, it looks like I missed something cause it didn't make sense at first read...
But about the assumption of some feeding live over dead, well, according to the tale it was dead when fed, by a dog, but dead none the less.
besides, with a chicken for a feeder, I kinda figured the snake was of a size that the owner had kept it for a while and knew of the damage a chicken can cxause.
Now I am not sure if you know about tsome of the viruses that fowl carries that can be detrimental to the snake, along with a parasite called coccidia.
Read this post to learn more about it.
Mouse/Rat alternatives.
Now the story is funny as heck!

Eddie, thanks for the concerned post. I haven't been too worried about any parisites or viruses so far, because my snakes have been fed from the same farmer for years with clean bills of health from my vet. I raise my own rats too. I'd be a little bit nervous about getting chickens from a factory type outlet, but these are private stock free range birds. I get offers all the time from people wanting to give me rabbits, ducks, blackbirds, ect. that they have caught or shot. I always say no. my snakes are worth too much to me to risk it. I am afraid to eat stuff like that myself cause of parisites! Thanks again, Bryan
