Feeding Frozen General

First off DO NOT FEED LIVE PREY!!!! The reason I say this is because live prey can cause your snake some serious injury, and you some serious vet bills after a bite. Now that this has been said, Feed your snake either prekilled or frozen/thawed prey. A real plus with the frozen/thawed is that no parasites can live thru the freezing method. Another NO NO is feeding the snake in its tank, for 2 reasons: (1) Your snake will think its feeding time everytime the cage is opened and this can lead to you getting bit. (2) Your snake can ingest some of his/her substrate while eating it's meal.

Now on to the feeding. The main rule to follow on size of prey is never feed anything larger than the widest part of the snakes body.. Starting with pinkies and fuzzies, feed every 5-7 days, hoppers and adult mice, 7-10 days and finally to rats or rabbits, remembering the girth rule. You can either feed 1 large rat every week or 2 rats at 1 feeding every 2 weeks

Now some ideas for the problem feeders that wont eat. Try putting your snake in its feed box and put him/her in a low traffic area of the house. Cover the feed box with a towel or a blanket and leave for about an hour (making sure you have air holes in your feed box). Then toss in the prey and cover back up. Leave for an hour or 2. If this doesnt work try the braining method. Use a pin and stick it thru the skull of the prey into the brain until it a liquid starts oozing out and offer your snake that. If your snake goes 4 weeks without eating its time to make a vet appointment.

Here is the method i use to convert my snakes from live to frozen prey. Start off with getting 2 prey much smaller than what you would normally feed. Give the first 1 live or stunned, when the first meal is down kill the 2nd and offer right away. Then with every feeding after this increase the time between the live/stunned and prekilled. If your killing the 2nd and waiting 45 minutes before offering and your snake is still eating it, on the next feeding go back to the usual sized prey and offer a frozen/thawed and they should eat it.. This metthod has worked for me with great success

Thaw them in the fridge over night or in warm water the day of for about an hour or two.

I kill my rats via CO2 method.

Re: Feeding Frozen General

hey I have 2 emeralds and I have tried to switch them to frozen... they are not digging on that at all. I am worried that they won't switch. I tried to feed them stunned and still nothing.. and when I put them in the feed box, getting them out is becoming a problem. They strike and hiss when I try to pick them up... Help me please

With emerald tree boas, your best bet will probably be to feed them in their own enclosure rather than in a feeding box. Also, these snakes are most active after dark, so that is when they should be offered food.

Re: Feeding Frozen General

Hi, I'm having big problems feeding my ball f/t. I got him to eat it once and that was after I waved the prey around and warmed it and made a holw in the skull and everything...finally I smacked him with the rat and he struck. I don't want to do this everytime, I fell like I'm abusing my snake ! Any other ideas? He has refused f/t and has not eaten for about 4 weeks now, I'm ready to give in and give him something live since I'm concerned about his health even though I know they can lasy a while w/o eating. Anu suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Talking Re: Feeding Frozen General

I have the same problem with my ball there will be times when he eats on a weekly basis and then turns around and won't eat for months. I have tried giving him frozen but he won't touch it so what I do is buy him live and put the mouse in a bag and bang it around to daze it (doesn't take much) and put it in a box and he goes for it right away. I do the same with my red tail that eats rats. They are both tame and have never struck at me also I tend to feed them late night when they are more active and are searching for food. If your snake is out and about at night most likely means they are looking for food.

Re: Feeding Frozen General

You can get a CO2 tank and attach a hose to it, and get a plastic bin of some sort to put the rats in, cut a hole just large enough for the hose... and voila.

I'm sure people have other better methods, but this is what I've seen a couple rat breeders who I used to buy from, do.

Re: Feeding Frozen General

yea rodent pro is REALLY awsome.. this week was the first week feeding my snakes fozen/thawed rats and it was great.. they ship things while everything is still rockhard frozen and everything.. and its pretty cheap for how much rats you can get.. i just put the rats in a plastic bag and put them in warm water in my garage and 4 hours later 2 medium rats are completly ready to be eaten

Snakefreak,

I had a similar problem. Try this......put the mouse or rat while its in its paperbag or paperbox inside the enclosure. Leave it there for a little while...make sure to supervise while this goes on in case the mouse or rat gets out.....After a few minutes the snake will pick up the scent and feel the vibrations from the prey moving. The snake should start to get close to the prey and look very interested....once its close and hovering around the prey...take the prey out....becareful not to get bit by snake because its now in feeding mode.....take the prey, kill it, and offer it to the snake.....wiggle it a little bit....and it should take right away....hope this helps!
