Okay guys. For those who are less fortunate with building things. I decided on the cage I'm building at the moment to make a tutorial.
Cage demotion: 48"x24"x18"
Total cost: In the $70's
Supplies that I had to buy:
1/2" MDF Plank - $15.59
32"x14" Window -...

but how does all the wireless work? How do you hook everything up to be wireless? Much cleaner then all the wires...but how??

Quick question shouldn't the mesurements on some of the boards be offset by 1/2 an inch since the MDF is that thickness?
So to make a 4' lenght X 2' width X 18 height" enclosure with a 3/4 inch thick MDF these would be the correct mesurements.
1. Bottom 49 ½ X 24 ¾
2. Top 49 ½ X 24 ¾
3. Back 49 ½ X 18
4. 2 Sides 24 X 18
Please correct me if I'm wrong....... Thanks for posting this thread it was very informative, and I apreciate the time you took to put it up. Thanks.

i think the measurements are the outside of the cage, the actual inner dimensions would be the 1/2" smaller though. i'm combining both cage designs, using MDF on the bottom and the rest is going to be framed and covered in tileboard, and i'm using incage light (boxed ofcourse) rather than UTH, that way the bottom is sturdy but cage is very light weight.

Your correct. Lol I never thought about that until I went to put it all together. When it came, I had to trim the back piece to fit. It was the only one that I had to trim though. Everything else worked. It's .5" thick by the way

Okay on the wireless part. Its not there isnt any wires, the onlything thats wireless is the switch which you can see on the front of the cage in this picture.
Theres still wires comming out the back of the cage, but they plug into this little white box (the wireless device) which then plugs into the wall. This way I can problem that light switch on the front of the cage to work seperatly for the lights. I can turn them on and off and also dim them using that switch. Theres still wires in the back of the cage, its just theres no wires leading to the switch. Hopefully that cleaned up some things for you and I can get pictures later if you want.

LOL shadraak...i understand the wireless part a little more now...but where did you get the wireless control setup and how much was it? Could you take pics of the contoler and device for us to see a little more? Is the setup pretty straight forward with the control device..as it tells you what to plug in where for the dimmer to control what and the on/off to control the other or do you just guess till you get it right?

he told me he got it at a garage sale, usually at radioshack for 30-40 bucks i think

that'd be great onlythings i'm puttin in mine is a heatlamp and a flourescent light for the BP, gonna put the healamp on a dimmer and mark it for different temps , or for day and night, but would like to add a switch for the flourescent to turn it on and off wihtout having to open the cage.

yeah i got a CHE, UTH and lights in my large one right now...setup with a sweet thermostat that controls the UTH and CHE. The lights are by themselves...but yeah id love to have the wireless look and clean look.
I came up with a great idea yesterday...i install hardwood floors...and we on occasions we install flush mount vents onto the floors...very nice and clean looking but not everyone gets this option as its alot more of course. My idea was to do that same thing you did with the vent on the outside...i liked that way it looked....but the wood vents are exactly the same thickness as my MDF material im using to build my cage right now..i think im gonna use one or two of those flush mount vents and build them into the side of the cage...as all i have to do is liquid nail them into place basically just make a cut out on the side panels to accomodate it to fit snug...what you think of that idea??

Hmm well I used screws to attach my vents. I didnt want to put the vents inside of the cage because there could be some big issues. I felt the edges of the vent and they can be sharp and ridgidy at some places. So if your snake is curious and rubbing against those vents, he can cut himself and get hurt. This is why I chose to place the vents on the outside of the cage. Then I dont have to worry about my snake being cut.
I didnt understand what you were talking about with the wood vents and it being flush with the MDF.

hey on that bedding question, i think what i was thinking of was crushed walnut shells not coconut shells, but what i have here looks like hamster bedding it just says pine bedding is that ok to use? *if baked ofcourse*

Theres been many debates on if pine is okay to use or not. Some wood secrets an oil that can be toxic to reptiles. I would just be safe and use aspen or cypress.
|
|
|
|
|
that's ok, just wont use it period, will use newspaper or papertowels as i have to have tons of newspapers anyway for the messy ferrets, boo boo will not use the litter pan in the main cage, but if itook him out skunky would be lonely and stop eating NEVER OWN FERRETS lol.

Newspaper and towels are the greatest. But since your housing ball pythons (correct me if im wrong) wood chips such as aspen and cypress look nice and it really isnt a hassle with smaller snakes. But the boa would be best on newspaper or papertowels (at least when its large).

well i still got a couple of weeks to get it all set up, and we're missing the key ingredient can you guess what it is ralphy?
