Custom cage tutorial
RehabRalphy
02-13-2006
Okay guys. For those who are less fortunate with building things. I decided on the cage I'm building at the moment to make a tutorial.

Cage demotion: 48"x24"x18"
Total cost: In the $70's
Supplies that I had to buy:
1/2" MDF Plank - $15.59
32"x14" Window -...

Its pretty heavy. But not really heavy. I would assume around 80-100 pounds.

Yes, the one 75 watt infrared light is heating the entire cage. Its 90 at the hot end and 80 on the cool. It keeps it at 65-70% humid all the time. I dont even have to mist the cage. Reason for this is because of the downward vents on the sides. Those help with humidity.

wow so just the waterbowl keeps that much humidity in there huh? and then even a hide would provide a cooler spot (shady) if need be, now if i was to do an MDF floor and the rest framed and set with showerboard i bet it'd be pretty good as well and very light.

yup. The waterbowl does the trick. Also the linoleum helps hold in heat and humidity.

MDF would work for you, but make sure you seal it very well. Otherwise you'll get warping.

ok lol, will work on just setting up a dimmer for the heating implement and then rig a flourescentlight in there for "seeing" light lol now just need to figure out how big to make it hehe, he's just a baby now and i think a 4' cage will last him quite a while hehe
he's in a 75gal aquarium now, but i'm thinking more along the lines of keeping him in it, now that i have everything working properly, and building one for the BP im gonna get, (can use a smaller cage that way) for a prototype.

yeah thinking about a MDF floor, then putting linoleum or showerboard ontop of that, then just framing the rest and putting tileboard on there, instead of making the whole cage out of MDF i'll combine both sets of cages and should have a very lightweight cage , i hope.

sounds good. Yeah this cage is a 4'x2'x18". You may think its small but it suits my boa. Hes pretty old and only 6 feet. Not girthy at all either. He doesnt require that large of a tank.

yeah those demsions would work. Even a 36"x18"x18" would work. Thats 60 gallons right there.

MDF is particle board. Its a man made wood. It cant splinter and its super durible.

that sounds good, a 36x18x18 sounds perfect for me then i'll do tileboard around the top and back and sides, just use the MDF as a sturdy base

Yeah mines only 18" tall and the light is still far from the ground. The light dimmer sounds great. They do sell "ready to go" light dimmers. You just plug the light dimmer into the wall, then the applicance into the dimmer. You can also put a shelf inside there too. That would look pretty nice.

Never used coconut bedding before. If you wanted to go with the wood chip route, go with aspen or cypress mulch. Make sure you bake the substrate before you use it. I used aspen and my boa got mites. All because I didnt bake my substrate. So now I use newspaper. I dont like the hassle of taking a large snake out of the cage and getting bedding everywhere on the ground. Smaller snakes are a different story. You can clean them off very easily. Large snakes take forever to clean off and its to much of a hassle.

Okay. For the bedding, just scatter some on a cooky sheet, and bake it at 180 degrees F for about 10 mins.
