Help varathane, wood sealer

hi there don't know if i am putting this in the right spot but,i have decided to add some shelves in my rtbci enclosure and my question is can i have wood that has been coated in varathane .there will be terrarium mat on top so they won't be laying on it but under side is exposed and they may come in contact. ?? what about fumes and off gasses. thanks any help will be greatly appriciated.

Re: varathane, wood sealer

Urethanes can take quite a while to completely stop gassing off, but they are superior to acrylics for sealing wood. Expect t wait a week or so. Once cured, it should be completely safe for your snake.

Did you use a water or oil based Varathane? I used Helmsmann Spar Urethane (oil based) outdoor wood sealer, and DANG, it has been like 3 weeks of hauling it out in the sun, fans blowing on it, etc and it is STILL a bit smelly.

Expect to wait a while if you use an oil based sealer.

Edit: Wow, I didn't realize how old this thread is....
