Re: DIY thermostat, calling all nerds....

There is another version of homemade thermostat.

http://redtailboa.net/forums/how-tos...me-winter.html

Keep in mind that whatever you make, include some safety features like fuses and overload relays.

The only problem with that one is that it's for a whole room utilizing space heaters. it works great, I guess, if you have a dedicated herp room with higher temps. Soom of us don't have separate rooms, but that is a better set-up.

I'm still looking for a nice thermostat with a probe on it so it doesn't have to go in cage.

If you want a non-proportional with the capability of a night-drop, get a Johnson-Controls A419. You can wire it yourself and with a control relay and timer, have a night-drop.

Re: DIY thermostat, calling all nerds....

Craig, thanks for that. Any idea where you can pick one up at? I think that would work pretty well.

EDIT: Nevermind, found it here: THERMOSTATS.

However, what is the big difference with proportional vs. non-proportional?

Re: DIY thermostat, calling all nerds....

The short version. Non-proportionals act like an on/off switch. When it comes on it is at full power until the probe signal tells it to shut off. Proportional stats constantly regulate the power to the heating equipment to maintain the setting. If it doesn't require full power to maintain the setting, it will reduce the power output to what is needed. Uses less energy.

Craig

No night drop, not programmable.

That is pretty much the whole reason I made this. There are cheaper options out there if you just want to maintain one constant temperature all day.
