Re: Feild Herping!
It is often the case with Bungarus, that they are shy during the day and active, often aggressive, after dark. The Bungarus candidus kept on trying to crawl under the grass and I became a little careless pulling him out by hand. When I took the picture of the Bungarus flaviceps (morning after capture), it made an aggressive display then when it saw we were not scared by it, it became very defensive- hiding its head and appearing scared. It is currently on display at the Thailand Museum of Natural History, where we have to force feed it every two weeks- notoriously difficult snake to keep alive in captivity- but beats being in a jar of alcohol and formaline, where it would otherwise be.
I did not know the guy who died. He was a labourer building new houses at the end of the neighbourhood. Was drunk, bitten and too slow going to the hospital (contributed significantly to his own death). Snake bite care is very good over here and I live only about 50km from one of the world's largest antivenin laboratories.
