incubator questions

i have a question about incubating gecko eggs. i know the temperature and humidity and everything but i was wondering if they should be in a substrate. the incubator is set up to put the eggs right on a metal screen type area. has anyone ever put them right on this area or have you always put them in a substrate somehow?
