Snake ID?
Native to the US, this juvenile measures 26 cm (~10 in.) in total length. What is it?

Re: Snake ID?
Almost looks like a... patternless brown water snake... I'm guessing some kind of water snake because of the keeled scales and just now much it looks like one.
Maybe just.... Brown Snake?

Re: Snake ID?
It looks like some aberrant Nerodia to me also, the head is way to big to be a Storeria, and the Frontal and prefrontal scales seem to be very Nerodia-ish, as well as its eyes.
but that is just my guess.

It's cute, that's what.
Other than that I'm clueless.

Re: Snake ID?
It's Nerodia, but not a brown watersnake.
Hint: The large head size is probably due to the age/small size of the snake.

I'm with you. Looks like the pattern wanted to form but didn't quite make it. I wonder if it will show up more once its not a juvi or if that's all he gets.

Re: Snake ID?
I don't believe I have ever seen a juvenile, but it looks like a Copper-Bellied Water snake (Nerodia erythrogaster neglecta)

Re: Snake ID?
Hmm...My one guess is up...
On a side note, John, I was down at Leesylvania State Park the other day, and saw some of your credited photo work displayed at a turtle-mockup pond they have there. Very cool

Thanks, I'm happy to hear that my pics are being put to use.
Another hint: The snake has a fairly large range, from southern Ontario and the northeastern United States from Nebraska and Kansas in the west to the Atlantic coast and as far south as North Carolina and southern Missouri.
