Re: Can you ID the Beast?
Please tell me all about this picture John. I would love to know who's alligator and where, as well as how old and if it is in a conservation breeding project. Have you worked with Terry Cullen regarding these beautiful alligators? I donated money to him I hope it did some good. He stated land for these animals is very limited and they may never be re-released into a stable environment, properly protected.
These animals are so amazing and in such small numbers I love hearing anything regarding their future.

Re: Can you ID the Beast?
Spike06 - I don't remember the gender of this animal.
Raze - At one time I was heavily involved with The Crocodile Specialist Group's Chinese alligator conservation program. The main problem with the Chinese alligator is the destruction/alteration of their native habitat. In captivity, under proper conditions these gators produce quite well, so well in fact that captive breeding has been greatly reduced in the U.S. because we're running out of places to house them. Zoos for the most part don't like these small gators because they are costly to maintain and don't bring in the money. Unfortunately, I don't remember much about the photo or the animal pictured. I haven't done much work with crocodilians over the last few years except a little with the Gharial Conservation Survival Alliance.

Re: Can you ID the Beast?
Really, too bad they won't let private citizens own them, I would love one (when I have a house). It is a shame to think we may lose 1 of only 2 alligator species in the world.

Re: Can you ID the Beast?
Germany and many other Eurasian areas pretty much have the animal populations in check. So extinction as a whole is probably not likely, however due to the lack of habitat. In 2003 a couple animals were released to see how a reintroduction would work, but I haven't heard much about these animals in some time. Sadly, everyone pretty much thinks the effort is futile due to the mass loss. So, I wouldn't worry too much about extinction of the species as a whole.
Also, in these same places, if you have the cash you can get yourself a cute little china gator.
I also believe I may have seen someone selling chinese alligators here in the states. Can't remember who, but I want to say Hank was. Don't quote me, however.

Re: Can you ID the Beast?
I wish I could own one legally. When I spoke with Terry (last Oct.) he said they were purchasing farm land for re-release but the farmers were not keeping poachers off the land, so they have to work somethings out.
I consider extinction when no more are left in the wild. Captivity is nice but it is a shame that is all we can hope for for these beautiful creatures.

I heard from someone here at UF, (Ross Perran possibly??) that the ones that were released did not establish. I can't remember how long they lasted or if there was one specific problem. This instance is one of those times I wish I had kept my notes...
I know that in FL A. sinensis are on the books as available to keep with a Class II permit. It is my understanding that Class II wildlife here in FL are able to be kept by the general public provided they meet all the requirements for the permit and have the permit. So there has to be a way to obtain one in the private sector. http://myfwc.com/permits/ESA-ESB3.pdf

Re: Can you ID the Beast?
Yeah, I haven't kept up with it much and the last I talked to Perran, sinensis never came up. I knew Florida had them down, but the likelihood of finding them here, I never really took much notice into it.
Guess, I need to get back with Perran.
