okay, currently don't have a picture...heh. anyway, this was seen outside in Georgia basking on a cold (50 degree) day. flees to the water typically.
long, slender head, reminded me a LOT of my columbian rainbow's head, black eyes, dark overall, sort of a reddish tint. obviously had some sort of pattern, could've been limited to the belly however. pattern that ran to belly was definitely a rusty-orangish-red coloring. fat-bodied, maybe about 3ft in length. this doesn't appear to be a young snake.
any ideas? will post picture if i can get one. thanks!

OK, ya'll get a sneak peak. Here is the link to a page on my site. You can only access it throuth the direct link right now. IT IS HUGE!!!! It has photos of EVERY snake that is native to GA according Dept. of Natural Resources. Range maps and descriptions are coming soon. This page will take A LONG TIME to load. It was designed for those that are trying to ID what was in their yard Eventually, it will be divided by region and pattern and so forth, but for now, here it is.

Brian, that didn't take all that long at all to load. All of like, 3 seconds, if even. Nice site! Can't wait for it to go public.

I would hazard to say it was a Midland water snake, as the Northern's range just barely gets into northern Ga, and even then, it overlaps with the Midland..
This is a pic of my 14 month old Sipedon (NWS), roughly 18" long.

We have a lot of midlands around here. We also have a lot of what are probably mutts. They vary greatly from creek to creek. Was the snake found near water Skadi?

While it's difficult to tell b/c the picture is small, but that looks an awful lot like a banded watersnake. Most northerns I've seen are more rust colored overall. That one has some VERY bright red atypical of the northerns I'm used to.
