Well, I cannot tell if it has moveable eyelids, but as best I can tell from the picture, it has no external ear openings, therefore I rule it to be a serpent.
Now, it looks to me to be some sort of whipsnake, based on it's bulbous eyes and fairly thin body relative to length, and the scales look very coachwhip like. However, the stripe running through the eye confounds me, I know no NA whipsnake/coachwhip/racer with such a stripe.

I have to agree with J. Riley on this one. The first thing I thought was Masticophis. There go those #$%^$%^$%^$%^& scientific names again. Sorry, guys. It's not really my fault. That's what years of reading stupid books does to you... To be honest, though, I think of a lot of snakes only by their common names, like when I see a Garter Snake, that's what I think. Ok, Ok, I'm done rambling now.

It could also be an arboreal African colubrid... Like a Bird Snake or Twig Snake. I'm not sure about the species, though... Now I'm more likely to go with Bird/Twig over coachwhips.

Hmm... Smooth Snakes usually are thicker, and all the ones I've seen have spots. But I've never kept one myself, so you could be right about that... Franky, I'm stumped.
