ID me, please ...
I was looking at coral snakes on the web when I came across this picture.
Now, I know this is not a coral snake, but the middle band over the yellow indicates it isn't a King, or Corn either, correct? What kind snake is it?

It's a coral snake from somewhere in south america...I forget where. But this is one of those species where the red touches yellow poem could get you killed

Great! So it is a coral. Well, maybe it's not so great ... it took me forever to get used to that poem and now it doesn't apply anymore, ... uhm.
Thank you very much for your help!

LOL Megan
The poem applies to all the US corals...EXCEPT!...there are some coral morphs out there or potentially out there! melanistic corals can easily look like a black kingsnake. amelanistic corals will just have red, yellow and/or white bands. Anery corals will lack the red making them strongly resemble any number of kingsnake species and axanthic corals will lack yellow. These are all rare...but make sure you properly ID any snake anywhere before you just pick it up.

Not certain. I had to go through Venomous Reptiles of the Western Hemisphere that has basically every Coral Snake (a couple hundred I think) and that was the closest one I could find.

Dont forget about pliocercus and Erythrolamprus two other remarkably similiar genus to the snake pictured.
they wont be in the campbell book since they are ophistoglyphic colubrids

I looked at pliocercus. I could not find anything exactly like the one pictured with the wide double cream/yellow bands and cream nose.

Something else of interest...some of the semi-aquatic corals have a flattened tail...like the one pictured above...kinda like their close relative the krait. They also use it for a false head to attract would be predators to the wrong end...or it could be a warning flag or even a caudal lure. But mostly it's a tail rudder for swimming. This is definatly a coral. I'm pretty sure that BW has it pinpointed to frontalis so it's probably in Brasil or the northern most point of Argentina possibly.

I think its a Lioheterodon that had its tail run over.
For sure.
yeah.
HAHA
j/k
but I do agree with the original ID, out of the 100 or so things it could be, thats probably the closest I could think of too.
granted, I let someone borrow my copy of the big two volume set so I havent had it at my fingertips for some time now.
