That looks like a definite Cottonmouth to me, no doubt about it, quite a big one, too.

The diamonds are a bit more yellow on their bellys.

100% Trap Jaw! Most definately Cottonmouths. And very nice ones at that (for those that think cottons are pretty).

Stupid question I'm sure but since there seems to be 3 in 1 shot are they breeding or do you normally find them together like that?

It certainly does appear to be breeding activity.

Off the coast of Louisiana, aboard an offshore drilling platform. Being that its a platform, vs a semi-submersible rig, its not too far out. Not sure as to the exact location, but most of the platforms we provide communications for are along the coast of Louisiana starting about Cameron, and stretching to Fourchon (which really no longer exists).

Most people in the know call them cottonmouths or water moccasins...but out there, they are actually mistaken more commonly for speed bumps than anything else. Sorry...I know I'm late answering. I missed this post before when it was fresher lol

Being as this is off of the cost of Louisiana, it seems to me that it would be entirely possible for these snakes to have been displaced by Katrina, perhaps washed out that way when the storm surge receeded? Looks like 3 in that last pic to me...beauties though. The one in the second picture is a fatty! Nice pictures of breeding activity!
