Here's the lil guy in question.
He/she lives by our back step, every night takes off on a
40-50 metre adventure.
How does it know the way home??
Any theories guys??

Kermit went down under huh? Cute frog very happy looking. probably a combination looking for prey, and looking for a mate. Possibly retraces its steps by scent.
How do you know for sure how far it travels.
Also What kind of frog is it? Whites Tree Frog?

Not a Whites or White-lipped. just a Common Greentree(LITORIA caerulea)
I've tailed him before on a number of occasions, he/she travels well into the back
neighbours place.

Frogs have some pretty keen senses. I was watching a show the other day about tree frogs. They were doing a study on the mating calls. When they go into a hollow tree stump or anything that will change the acoustics, they will alter their pitch untill they get it to come out normal again. What I want to know is how they know what it sounds like outside the hole. I don't know how they find their way back, but I have seen several frogs over the years that would go away by day and end up back at the pool or birdbath or different places not only every night through the warm months...but even reappear the following year. I have seen this at least once. A certain 3 legged bullfrog that liked my inlaw's pool.

Very cool looking frog. Actually, that is a White's tree frog, their latin name is Litoria caerulea. *Puts on his best college professor voice* And thus, my lowly students, is why it is important to use latin names, the American version of the green tree frog is a completely different species. *end voice* You're lucky you actually get these in your backyards out there. As for frequently returning to the same place, I guess some animals just know where home is, like homing pigeons.

Point taken there Bry , when Edr said 'whites' I
wrongly assumed he was refering to what we call
a 'white lipped treefrog'( Litoria infrafrenata).
This guys been here since we moved in ,2 yrs ago, and returns
every night to exactly the same hidey-hole.Kinda neat to have him around .
