Why

Why do we not have a thread/how-to on how to identify different snakes or at least place them in a genus or species?

sounds like a good idea to me. But do you think pics or just physical descriptions? If it were pics, it should be like the news stories that have to be approved before they are posted.

Using a dichotomous key one can determine the proper family of the native snakes of the United States and Canada with only about 6 keys/questions. As you move down to the genus level the keys will require more steps. For example there are approximately 50 keys/questions to determine genus within the family of Colubridae.

I was thinking using something that sounds a lot like the dichotomous key john is talking about I learned something about it in high school biology and figured it would be cool to have somewhere on the site. Pictures of what the questions are talking about would help too.

What good does any of that do when herping in the Florida Everglades where "native" is a very loose term. Smooth greensnake or baby green mamba? It's a legitimate question down there lol
