Herrmann Haus Herpin'
April has been a banner month at the Herrmann Haus for spotting and catching Herps. It sorta makes up for the past few years, and I guess I lied to BW when I told him "There ain't no snakes in my yard!" - Sorry BW.
Found this crazy musk maker in my backyard under the bridge....I never look under there but yesterday I did. Didn't know where the snake hook was and had to hook it with a golf club until Herm came back from getting us lunch to get the snake hook. By that time the little beast was wrapped around the sink pipes in my bathroom and was stinking up the joint with her musk glands.
Eastern Chain Kingsnake, Catch and release, let her go right back under the bridge. I hope she hangs around and makes babies!

Thanks - I took the pics while Herm was barefootin it. I had already given the little nipper a taste of my index finger when catching her, so I knew she had a thing for fingers, not toes!

Looks like a boy to me. Kinda large for a girl....well I dunno, females will get that big eventually sometimes but from what I have ever caught in Georgia...it's really rare to find a female with that kinda size. It's odd how much bigger it looks in the second photo than the first... Nice find.

Nice find, Tambra. *sigh* I need to move back down South. You don't always have to go get the herps, sometimes they come to you.

Great capture.
If you *really* want more snakes in your yard put up a few more bird feeders and make sure you spill ample seed on the ground. Throw in a few sheets of plywood, several sheets of tin, a half dozen or so old car hoods and sell the lawn mower! - Low maintenance landscaping for snakes!

Great find!
John.... I tried to do the long grass and hiding spot thing in a small corner my front yard.... and tried to explain to the yard nazis that we were trying to recreate a natural environment for local species preservation... they still sent my a home owners assoc notice of violation though

What a pretty chain! I have been bitten by every chain I have worked with this year. I think they finally figured out that they are protected in GA and got cocky

LOL Brian...I have noted that the temperment of eastern kings vary by how I find them. If I find them out crawling around and catch them on the run, then 10 times out of 10 they are nasty little biters and since I don't keep them very long usually, I don't know if they calm down or not. If I flip over a board or something and catch one asleep and gently pick it up without pinning it or otherwise upsetting it, usually I end up with a very tame easy to handle kingsnake. I guess they are big on first impressions or something. Same thing holds true at least for me with local ratsnakes but by no means holds true for watersnakes or racers lol.
