Field report for this past weekend
Spent several hours herpin' this weekend. Temperatures in the mid 60's and started by checked out a den site which is normally used by 25-28 blackrat snakes.

However it looks as if the snakes have probably already dispersed for the season. But did manage to find 2 black rat snakes basking about 30 feet up in a tree.
Checked a few vernal pools and a couple ponds and saw many eastern painted turtles, green frogs, spring peepers, American toads and a single adult spotted salamander.
Drove a short distance to check a timber rattler den. Mass emergence for horridus is well under way, counted 42. I was surprised that no copperheads were seen.
On the way back home found this eastern king crossing the road.

Thanks Brian!
Good luck at Ft. Bragg! I've had a rough time gaining access to some of the military bases in my area. I guess it's a sign of the times. One of the northern most locations in the state for the Carpenter Frog (Rana virgatipes) is on military property.
