A friend of mine and I decided to take off on Sunday afternoon and herp all night out in West Texas (Val Verde/Edwards counties). We drove out there, seeing numerous DORs... western diamond backs, coachwhips, tx ratsnakes, ground snakes, and a horrific find - a completely flattened banded rock rattler.
Living... we came across a few western diamond backs, a nice big adult coachwhip (which I almost brought home, but they are sometimes problem feeders if you take them as adults so I figured I wouldn't bother). Then... the thing that made the whole trip worth while. We came across a living, breathing, rattling, banded rock rattler which got bagged and brought back with us.
We came across a nifty find...

I wish the pic had come out better, but the orange/brown pile at the top is a pile of ring-tailed cat droppings. Very fresh... still steaming. The stringy thing hanging in the middle of the pic is a freshly killed blackneck garter snake. Musk still in the air. When we pulled up we must have scared the cat away from his meal. Was fun... not much of an adventure, but thought I'd share because I'm bored. =)

What a crying shame about all the DORs, but the rest is totaly awesome! I love the pics. I am soooooooo jealous now. But there is supposed to be some 'huge yellow with black blotches and long head with a bad attitude' in my backyard. Unfortunatly, I am the only one who hasn't seen him/her. Nobody in my family was willing to try to catch it so I could see it. I am going to try to find it, I want a pic so you can tell me what it is.

Yeah, despite the gruesome finds, sounds like you had a blast. I would love to do that sometime myself. Not sure how many snakes I can find in this part of NY or back in Colorado.

My friend has it, with the agreement that the next time we find one, I get it. =)
