Rainforest trip,(plentypics)
Well I'm back from my lil' adventure up north to the
rainforest, I must say I'm a bit dissapointed. In four nights
and five days I only saw four snakes, two of those were roadkill.!
One good size carpet 6-7ft(roadkill), one Rough-scaled snake Tropidechis carinatus (roadkill),one common tree snake (not the blue),and the tail of one I didn't get a good enough look at to I.D.
I did see these two guys however.
Also saw heaps of water dragons but they are too darn quick and wily for me to get a pic of.
Don't understand the lack of snakes, the forest was absolutely crawling with fuzzy snake food.
A case of better luck next time I guess.??
Anyway heres some shots of the country I was travelling through.
P.S. I'll get that old pic of a blue tree snake up A.S.A.P. for you Lady D.![/img]

Thanks Kohm, yep it's a Leaf-tailed Gek,(Saltuarius cornutus) first one I've seen so I was pretty excited about that, I was surprised at how big they are. Also my first sighting of that monitor species
but I thought I'd leave it to you guys to try and guess what it is!!

Hey Sav, I flew over what I guess must be 'The Everglades' on the
way into Miami. That was a pretty impressive expanse of swampland!
The bayuo(sp?),if thats what you call it, of the U.S. has always intested me.
Thanks Ted, and don't I know it!

Great shots none the less. Prolly ani-mules that I will never get to see in the wild. Great stuff.

"looks like a freckled monitor...Varanus tristis orientalis"-Jules
Close Jules, but no cigar!, the monitors length is only about 1ft. snout to vent,
as a bit of perspective for you.

So that was your voice in my head saying "ya shoulda gone to the desert, didn't I tell ya so". As I was sweating my butt off ,dragging it round the rainforest.

Not big on the fluffies??, me neither really, but I had to bring back some pics of Something!! :P

Thanks BoaMan,!
I may have sent you on a goose chase Brian.
Jules I owe you an apology, you were completely 100%
correct with Varanus tristis orientalis (a.k.a. Black-tailed monitor), I was looking at
references with contradicting ranges. You were right on
the mark.

hmmm I guess a good point for adding scientific names instead of just common names since common names vary. How hard is it for you Aussies to even say "monitor" when referring to your lovely goannas? lol
