Day trip around La Grange, TX
Took some time yesterday to fill protein and spin feeders for my whitetail deer on our land in La Grange. While there, I decided to do some herping. I have always been interested in finding a coral snake, and that is what I set a goal to do.
After getting all the feeders filled and running, my brother and i went on the hunt. I have an old fire poker that works great for pulling apart rotting logs, and flipping over most objects. (one day I will get a real snake stick) After hours of pouring sweat, and playing with nothing but scorpions, I found one. Not in or under a rotting log, not under a piece of bark, but instead, it was just crossing a walking trail that we cut through the woods a couple of years ago.
This is the first coral snake I have ever found in the wild... (sorry for the bad pics, they are from a cell phone)
We did find one more snake in some thigh high grass, but it was gone as soon as it appeared. In the end, the count was 9 scorpions and one coral snake.

Re: Day trip around La Grange, TX
Thanks for posting the pics. I have always like coral snake as red is my favorite color. I have never seen one in the wild but I hear they are not an aggressive snake. But I guess when you are that venoms you don't need to be. LOL
Take care
Tom

This one was very calm, and showed absolutely no aggression. That said, I still did not let my guard down.

Awesome find!
That's pretty large for an eastern coral. The record total length is 1,207mm (47.5 inches).

For some reason, I thought the snake was captured in GA..... Perhaps I need to cut-back on my Friday drinking.

Re: Day trip around La Grange, TX
Awesome coral, I have yet to find one out here in San Antonio even after traipsing through the woods for whole days at a time, meanwhile I see people finding them in their friggin backyards. Nice pics, man.

Re: Day trip around La Grange, TX
Nice find.
I have worked with many corals and they are in fact very easy going.
I have even heard of young kids catching them and cariying them around in thier pockets for hrs without getting bitten (luckly for the kids). I have cosidered keeping them but they are a pain due to the fact that they only eat other snakes and can be difficult to get started.
Maybe one day.
