White Sands New Mexico (major DUW!)
Spent July 4th Weekend in White Sands National Monument. Got to see 3 endemic species of lizards and enjoy camping on the dunes. Each of the species have adapted white coloration in response to the dune habitat.
I highly recommend it for anyone who visits New Mexico!!
(No Crotalus spp. yet... )
Little whiptail White Sands color phase (Cnemidophorus inornatus)
Bleached earless lizard (Holbrookia maculata ruthveni)
It appears that these guys increase and decrease their melanin content in response to light intensity.
Here's one we caught at about
And after 100
White sands fence lizard (Sceloporus undulatus cowlesi)
And the non-herp ones
The closest we got to seeing Kit foxes (Vulpes macotis)

Awesome pix! Thanks for sharing! Wow love that sunset...the last one of water seems incongruous with the sand dunes? When you find a Crotalus be sure to say wakey wakey for me!

Re: White Sands New Mexico (major DUW!)
The last species I would have expected to see were shorebirds in the middle of the desert!! There is a man-made lake about 3 miles away from White Sands (Raptor Lake wildlife area). We saw the American avocets, Killdeer, Black-necked stilts, Cassin's Kingbirds, and two other unidentified birds.
No snakes at all even thought we went out between 0630 and 1000.

Re: White Sands New Mexico (major DUW!)
It's finally started! We trapped rodents last week and we'll be setting up another 3 lines (transects) today for this week. We've caught 2 Colorado chipmunks (Tamias quadrivittata) and about 7 deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus). The downside is using a hepa filter mask when working up the Peromyscus to prevent the contraction of Hantavirus. I had to shave to wear the mask Small price to pay for not dying you know

You're thinking of Roswell? or Area 51? White Sands is a missile test area (and nuke test site years ago!)

Re: White Sands New Mexico (major DUW!)
Aby - you just have to apply to the cool jobs and hope for the best! That's what I've always done.
HerpHappy - yes coming from Florida being able to see for miles in every direction is a novel sight! I'm still amazed at seeing the cool cloud formations! As I'm driving around, the Who's song "I can see for miles and miles..." eventually pops into my head.
Icicle - No UFOs but did have some SBDs courtesy of something at Denny's...
