Re: Snakes already
That's very exciting!
I didn't have time to go trail herping last year. I'm hoping I can do it this year. Lots of cool stuff to find at Cave Spring!

Re: Snakes already
Matt I'm sure you could find snakes down there right now, I REALLY want to go check out my crote dens.
Field herping RayRay Fieldherping.com check it out. Sometimes I consider getting rid of my snakes and spending that money on a couple trips a year. It's something completely different seeing snakes in the wild doing their thing. Don't mean to go PETA on you guys, it's just an internal struggle I deal with.
Not to mention me losing most of my Spilotes and Pseustes over the Holidays...doh!

Re: Snakes already
I hear ya man, I frequently wonder how much longer I am going to want to keep captive snakes, the more I interact with them in the field, the worse I feel about keeping them in cages.
but its not an easy internal struggle to resolve.
you going to head to W.tx or AZ in 2010?
we have 30's and snow/ice inbound, doubt i'll see any snakes. lol

Re: Snakes already
I just want to keep less and smaller ones so I can build big elaborate cages and see them in more natural settings. Once I get done Steralizing and rebuilding the big cage I'm thinking Opheodrys or Prasina.
I'm REALLY trying to get down there again soon but Indiana, Kentucky, Georgia are on my list too. I may just be broke and have to settle for Zonata west of the Rockies.

Re: Snakes already
Up here in Portland Oregon the snakes have began to move in mass, This is outside a Den site frequented by Thamnophis ordinoides and Thamnophis sirtalis concinnus, I'm sure there could be Sharp tails, Ringnecks and Rubber Boas but have yet to find any.
T. ordinoides
Ordinoides Mating
This female was dragging the male around
Sorry for the lame commentary...
Thamnophis sirtalis concinnus
I stood and watched 10-15 garters cruising in and out of the hole you can barely see.
And both species competing for the best basking spot.
I know they're "only" Garter snakes but it is nice seeing them right now.

Re: Snakes already
Well, I think I need to move to Portland. Seriously though, it's been the warmest winter I ever experienced in Southern OR, it was a little over 60 today but I haven't seen any snakes out yet. Lots of chirping frogs though, but I've never seen snakes just slithering all over like that. Thanks for sharing.

I'm sure you have snakes moving, where about are you?
Does anyone know how to format so you can watch movies in a post?
