Re: Texas red tails 12/24/09
I see that armadillo!
I got the pleasure of seeing a red tailed hawk here in the city. Actually, I don't know if it was really a pleasure, with it being the city and all, but sometimes they will roost up on the overhangs. I'd rather see them out in the country where they belong.

RayRay.. I have noticed that they thrive in the city, I see many of them right out side of Philly and Harrisburgh (both big cities if you didn't know lol) But their is plenty of food , shelter etc.. I agree though I like seeing them in the 'country'..

How did you manage not getting torn up by those beaks and claws?
Gorgeous birds and great pics.

Redtail Hawks are awesome birds, we have a ton of them around here. I never seen a white tailed hawk before, pretty cool.

Those hawks really are beautiful.. In that one case she was a real pest and had been nipping me without results for a while so at that point it was a stand-off.
.
Here's more that I've met.... an immature animal..
.

.
.. and another adult.

Re: Texas red tails 12/24/09
Great thread!!! Those animals are absolutely incredible. There's a place near my house (requires a bit of a hike) that has a large population of hawks, and I usually take my dog up there and sit and observe these animals in flight. They're probably one of the most efficient birds in the air that I have ever seen.
One time I had the opportunity to see one of the hawks hunt for food...it was absolutely incredible to see! It did a couple of circles in flight and then it swooped down and caught another bird that was already in mid-flight, with only one try! The speed, accuracy, and precision of these birds are beyond belief. Definitely one of my favorite.
Thanks for sharing!

Re: Texas red tails 12/24/09
We have a bat house here in Gainesville that was built to get the bats to move out of the football stadium. You can watch the bats fly out in swarms every evening and there's always a couple of hawks hanging around to catch them midair as they come out, its pretty amazing to watch.
