Crime scene analysis

Looks to me like a bird got killed. Found some holes that don't seem to be occupied by crawfish, larger than most others around the property.
Anyone have any ideas or opinions?

Re: Crime scene analysis
Some kind of water/swamp dwelling snake killed a small wading bird...??? Dunno.

Re: Crime scene analysis
For a second, I thought I saw a shed skin by the hole. That would have really wrapped it up (no pun intended).

Re: Crime scene analysis
The back yard is mostly just a field, and the property is surrounded by cow fields. I've never seen any cats around, so I figure it might have been a snake. Think a snake would come out and look around if it smelled a bird by the entrance to its hole?
King snakes, rat snakes, and racers all are native. Anyone know if they would be likely suspects?

Re: Crime scene analysis
My guess would be a bird of prey captured a bird.

LOL! That definately would have been "evidence A". A shed has been found about 50 yards from where I took the pics, though it was over a year ago. I saw a small black snake not too long ago which I believe to be a baby racer, wish I could have gotten some pics.

Very possible, I didn't think of that.

Star you are supposed to be on your 20000 post thread.
Sure I think it could be a king or rat snake...or do you have water mocassins in Louisiana?

Re: Crime scene analysis
John White is probably right!!!
Of course we would all like to think it was a snake that did it...could be...! Except that the grass is not really too disturbed around it like a snake might cause, so more than likely, a bird of prey...if it just happened recently.

Indeed we do, though I have never seen any on the property. No water sources, and the yard drains fast. Will definately keep an eye out though.

Less than 24 hours ago. I don't have the field experience to be able to tell about the grass. Do snakes really make that much of a disturbance that you can tell? I really need to get out in the woods more lol

Re: Crime scene analysis
I'd say bird of prey kill but the holes could be from gophers or other dwelling animals?

Most of your random looking holes in peoples yards in the South East are crawdad burrows.

Re: Crime scene analysis
It's Louisiana, having crawfish holes in your yard is a requirement

Lol, that's the truth. I'm right across the border and most of my family is in the Ville Platte/Mamou area in LA.
