Front Yard Discovery
I've been finding these little guys in my yard quite a bit lately.
That's why I check my yard carefully before I mow.

Nice find, it would be really awful if you mowed over one...such a cute little thing.

I was going to guess that. I feel all special now.
I have to ask... did he try to stab you with his little pointy tail? Every time I catch those around here, they seem to use their tail as a defense mechanism.

He twirled his tail around and then pushed my hand w/ it. Then he pooped on me.

Re: Front Yard Discovery
So far, I've only seen the house geckos, what looked like an anole (it was dark out), and a skink of some sort. I may be going to the nature center tomorrow to do some herping

Flip over everything that you can. Just be careful. East Texas has some nasties.

If one end buzzes, stay away from the other end.

I agree with your ID.
In case you're interested, a couple graphics to explain earth snake identifications:

In my neck of the woods we also have the mountain earthsnake (Virginia valeriae pulchra).

Hey El Cascabel, what part of TX are you in? I'm in Southeast TX and mainly find geckos and the occasional water moccasin,

DFW Metroplex. There's plenty of herps other than geckos and cotton mouths in your part of the state, it's just a matter of being at the right place at the right time and herping in the right conditions.
I'll bet you can find milk snakes, rat snakes, eastern hognoses, buttermilk racers, copperheads, rattlers, ribbon snakes, etc, etc.

Re: Front Yard Discovery
I found one of these I believe last night at work. Im guessing it was because he repeatedly stabbed my hand with its tail. He was trying to be fast but just couldn't get traction on the concrete. I picked him up and put him in a large group of banana trees with an ample supply of small lizards running around. He should be happy now.
