Remember in the early posts about the camping trip when we said we'd worry about who is bringing what when it got closer to time to go? Ok...that time is now. If I understand correctly, and unless someone else wants to make a gracious offer, with the exception of Sunday breakfast, which I'm taking care of, everyone is on their own for food...there are some "community" items though, that we could arrange, in order to avoid shortage or duplication. For instance...who's got a portable CD player (boom box...whatever the kids call em these days)? I've got one electric frying pan, and a good cast-iron pan, but given the amount of breakfast I'll be making, if someone else has another electric skillet, it would be more than welcome. Lantern? You know, in case we want to step outside of the luxury of the cabin...lol. If I remember correctly, Jules was gonna bring CB radios, but needed batteries (AA)...
Now is the time to start figuring this out.
By the way, if anyone else is still interested in going...contact BWSmith ASAP...there is still room. Do you really want to be the one looking at our pix and posts afterwards and saying "Man, I wish I'd gone on that trip..."?
Oh, yeah...for those of you wanting to caravan...time to start figuring that out too...
Is it time to leave yet?

I have a base station for the camp site if I can get the mic wired correctly...and I have a cb in my truck....but most importantly, I have 8 handheld cb radios so noone should get lost out herping or be unable to call for help if bitten by something. I think it is highly important to keep in touch down there. Emergencies happen. I have a GPS too and so does Brian. I am also bringing a laptop with a cell modem just in case we are in cell range so we can get online and taunt those that are too good or too far away to join us. Usually I have plenty of giveaway snake hooks but I have given them all away and haven't had any old used golf clubs thrown my way to make any....I do have several new ones though that I will be selling on ebay. I can toss some in the truck incase anyone is interested. I think for the most part it would be best to just get there....see what we wanna cook and caravan on down to a grocery store. I'm sure there will be many trips made to the store. Remember that the beds are bare. Bring sheets and a pillow case or your own pillow....twin size....ewww

My son has a small radio/cd player. It is small though. As far as food, should we just bring food for each of our parties? Or should we do a pitch in pot luck kinda thing? My son got a new telescope for Christmas and is dying to try it out (too bright in our area too get good views). I also have a 500,000 candle power spot light that plugs into the cigarette lighter of a car, maybe use it for road cruising? When not herping, I'll have to teach y'all the joys of 16" softball. I just have to be careful on how much stuff I'm bringing. My Jetta's trunk can only hold so much. Any suggestions or requests for supplies let me know what I can help out with. Ed_r@redtailboa.net
FYI as it stands right now I'm planing on leaving Chicago on the 23rd about 3PM when Dave gets home from school. Yahoo says its 14 hours for me to get there. I won't be pushing the speed limit too much. Remeber everyone Memorial Day weekend is a HUGE weekend for the police to nail speeders.

OK, as it stands now, I have 36 AA batteries and 12 AAA batteries. I am getting another 36 AA batteries and 24 AAA batteries in next week so there should be plenty of batteries.
I am bringing 4 two-way radios that each have a range of 2 miles (yeah right! a mile if I am lucky). I also have 3 regular flashlights and a big flashlight.
I am leaving at 2 am Friday the 23rd. I pulled the boys out of school for that day as it is a 15 hour drive and I really don't want to miss most of the weekend at the site by spending it driving. I should get to the camp grounds by 5 pm Friday evening.
As far as food goes, we can survive on junk food for a weekend
I haven't made a shopping list for food items yet, but will most likely bring the essentials.....
Pepsi, hotdogs, chips etc. Just like a camping trip.
AND MAKE SURE EVERYONE BRINGS MARSHMALLOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As of now. Who all is still going? Do we have an accurate head count?
Also a question for all the locals. What other sorts of wildlife is in the area? Besides the herp fauna. Cougar, Wild Boar or anything else of the sort?

FYI: I am still waiting on money from a few people.
I should have enough gear for a few people. Several hooks and a set of tongs and a bag stick. Got the Million Candle Spot light thing for road cruising. I think that for the most part food will be "fend for yourself".
As far as loval wildlife, I have seen bear, dear, skunk, muskrat, boar, beaver **takes a sip of coffee** And I think we got bobcats and cougars down there in addition to campground wildlife like coons and possums....... and of course we have the Skunk Ape And saw one other odd animal downt here that I can't ID, good story though
I am taking the 23rd off work so i am leaving on Thurs night at about midnight to get down there during good road cruising and then head back to camp about lunch or so to check in. That is the plan at least, but hard to say for certain since Jessa goes in for for surgury on the 16th

To get a large hemroid removed? J/k Hope she is ok.
Since there is some potentially dangerous wildlife in the area. I would advise that everyone instruct the kids on proper protocal with such animals. Of course being in groups we will be very safe.

There ARE Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes ont he grounds and last time the mainenance guy said he saw a large one laying next too the Group Lodge *crosses fingers*. The Coral I am picking up from them was found in the ladies room.
Maybe I sould give a little snakebite class................... stop, drop and roll! no wait, that's not it. But in all seriousness, we are in Diamondback, Coral Snake, Copperhead, Canebrake Rattler, Cottonmouth, AND Pygmy rattler territory. Mojo did very well with mini-Mojo teaching him to stay several feet behind one of us if we found a snake.
Give yourself a refresher if you are not too familiar with the hots there, particularly the Pygmy, kindof innoccuous if you are not used to them.
But with so many people there, I dont think snakes are going to wander too close to the lodge. just be careful walking at night, always have alight. And don't go sticking your head in Gopher Tort Burrows!

If we cannot stick our heads in a Gopher tort hole, how are we going to get you out when you fall in?

Herm and I are heading down Friday...still haven't decided if we are leaving first thing in the AM, or around noon. If anyone wants to convoy, let us know so we can determine if it is something we can work out together. We may be taking Mojo Jr. with us, not sure yet.
