Water Snake bite is alittle rough. They tend to chew in and they have an anticoagulant in their saliva so you bleed a lot!

s'matter, didn't have a supply of freshed molted cray fish to feed the queen snake?
And what species of water snake did you catch? They look like Midland's to me or maybe northerns, hard to tell from the pics.

Hi J!
I have always called those northerns. I am pretty certain they are not Broadbands, and the northern and midland ranges do overlap here, so it could be either/or. Or they could be integrades.
And you are correct... Freshly molted crawdads are hard to come by.
Thanks for looking... we did have fun!

Northerns and Browns are two different species. I have always debated wether these are midlands or northerns.
Now if I could just find a Kirklands...

Northern's are the most variable watersnakes there are I think. Even specimens from the same locality can look fairly different. And they go through interesting color change as they grow, so it's harder when you can't tell what size they are. Juvenile Sipedons usually have a lot of rusty red coloration, espically along their sides that they don't have as neonates or sub-adults/adults.
Midland's usually have dark marking narrower than their light marking between them.
Were these large females or skinny little males?
