Starr County and Zapata 5/26/09!

Sorry but not enough photos for all the neat stuff we saw and found!

8:30am we found a Schott's Whipsnake, soaking up some sun nearby a dump site in Roma Tx. It took off before I could do anything,I did not have my camera on me, while flipping boards. (lots of spiney lizards thou)

10:00am, we headed out to Zapata and where giving directions by the nice friendly border patrol to cruise a certain farm road. We came upon an old abandoned home... nothing inside, but outside in the back we found the nicest western diamondback rattlesnake I've ever seen. She (or so I think it's a she) was coiled nicely under an old shrub. She had to be at least 5ft, never rattled, never struck, she attempted to flee when we got too close. And then attemtped to coil up and hide her head, when we harrassed her a little for photos.

10:30am, we decided to go further into the woods, and see if we could find any more rattlers, we came upon some old boards near the lake, and found this little guy; Texas Night Snake. This guy was coiled nicely under his little den. Snapped some quick photos and left him be.

11:30am-1:30pm we fished...........(nothing for me at least)

2:00PM, I decided we'd go back to Roma, and see if we could find anything else back in the farm roads we had traveled earlier in the morning. we found no snakes, but I was able to finally confirm but not photograph Reticulated Collard Lizards. It was hot, and no spiney's could be found... this guy ran into the road and back out. When we stopped the car, and got out to get the camera. He peeled it......... but I know for a fact it was a reticulated collard lizard, it was huge, bigger than any spiney lizard and that yellow head! (I know the area now... so I'll be on the search)

2:30PM, we conituned to search the same farm road we saw the collard lizard on, in hopes to see it again and photograph it, with no success. But upon leaving the farm road, and getting back onto the expressway, we had the luck of seeing a texas horn lizard run across the road pause for a moment by a cactus patch, and peeled it as soon as I got out of the car with the camera (i need a lens for taken photos from far away)

after that we headed home...................

I'm gonna try and start going out by myself, seems like alot of my buddiea would not be able to hack the heat, dirt, dust, and bugs while herping. I had to cut this trip short because my buddy started complaining. if you noticed I do wear pratically the same stuff every time I'm herping... but its my comfortable clothes...
