Arboreal Truck Tire
Did a little herping on Sunday, really didn't find anything too exciting until the walk back to the car. Saw what looked like a truck tire in the lower fork of a tree..... On closer inspection saw that it was a large Melanistic Eastern Hog-nosed Snake (Heterodon platirhinos).

The snake was detained for photos and then released. Eastern hogs as a general rule don't thrive in captivity, but there are people that had good success with them. Here in VA, 20% of our hogs are melanistic.
