I was thinking maybe we could make this a sticky and people could suggest things to bring on a herping trip, where to go, what to look for, or maybe just some tips that might make someones herping trip more successful.

Here is my list.
Hooks:
- A good field hook (string enough to flip tin and logs)
- Small hook for Pygmys and babies
- Tongs (Gentle Giant) for aquatic and arboreal species
- Bag Stick
- Bags
- Zip Ties
- Tupperware
- Zip Lock Bags (for keeping stuff dry and for carrying Phibs out)
- a good knife
- GPS
- Maps
- Toilet Paper (you never know where you will be)
- Permits (if needed)
- Overnight Bag
- Sleeping Bag (many herping nights end with a sleeping bag ont he side of a Gator Hole )
- Beef Jerky and other snacks that don't need a cooler
- WATER
- Compass
- First Aid Kit
- Snake Bite Emergency Protocols and Emergency Meds
- Extra socks and shoes
- Field Guides
- Luck
Just what I could think of off the top of my head. Sometimes my herping trips are a little hardcore (72 hours and no sleep). I try to be prepared for about anything.
Didnt I make a long post a while back on Field Herping tips?

Hey Now!
First of all...I don't think Brian can carry all that LOL....and why do you need a GPS AND A compass? Skeered of getting lost? LOL
Bags are important....unless you have deep pockets...Hooks are always helpful. Permission from landowners is always nice. phibs? I never felt a need....but OK. LOL Most important thing you can carry though...is a big Scarecrow!!! It sucks to get outherped by a crow!

IT only takes one time diving into a thicket and pushing your way through it for a water snake. After that, the tongs look pretty good. We'll let J_Riley "Hook" the cottonmouths out of swamp water I'll just grab it, bag it, and move on
Unfortunately, a lot of my field herping is for Dept of Natural Resources. So I have to capture a lot of amphibians, lizards, frogs and various other feeder items

uhhhhh. Yeah. You would think I would learn that field herping pics of me are less than flattering by now.

Good list!
I would only add a cell phone to the list.

I always have my cell with me, but in South GA swamps, i generally dont get any reception. I need to start tagging gators with mini-cell towers

Yea, you guys got real woods down there.... Up here the woods arn't much more than oversized lots waiting for townhouses, strip malls or another Starbucks
I guess on the upside you can always get pizza delivered to your camp site while you're out roughing it.

Thanks for the invite! I sure would like to .. but I'm just too lazy (and/or old) to battle I-95 traffic on Memorial Day Weekend.

-Flasks, disguised as binoculars: cuz some state and national parks forbid alcoholic beverages, also, cuz open container laws are a pain
-those combination fan/sprayer things: oh yeah that feels good
If it's an overniter, and you know the campground has electrical hookups, an electric frying pan, cuz it's hard to keep a steady temp on a campfire. And it has many uses...cooking, boiling water, space heater
-Dish soap: Two words....trout coffee
-rain gear
-lighter fluid
-extra lighter
-beer (was I really the first to mention that?)
-Towels, the singular most useful item in the entire universe (you geeks know what I mean)
-a deck of cards
-bug spray, and lots of it
-instant coffee, unless of course you just got a fire-powered percolator for your birthday
