The salamander pictured is a Shenandoah Salamander (Plethodon shenandoah) not the somewhat similar looking, common, Eastern Red-backed Salamander (Plethodon cinereus). The total world-wide distribution of P. shenandoad is limited to 3 mountain tops in Virginia, this is why they are listed as "federal endangered." For additional information see:
