I just got back today from a 3 day trip to south west Texas. We stayed at Seminole canyon state park which is located about 50 miles west of Del Rio, right on the Mexican border. The trip was setup by the South Texas Herp Society. There were only 9 of us and we had the park all to our selves for most of the time we were there. There was much wildlife which included deer, javalina, jackrabbits (which would just sit there and look at you) and many types of herps. We were doing nightime road hunting for snakes which produced several nice atrox (western diamondbacks) and a texas banded geko which is spectacular and some outrageous footage of some western ribbon snakes. It was a full moon which kind of killed a lot of the snake movement at night since it was so bright. We had with us the head trauma nurse from the University trauma center here in San Antonio which handles all the snake bites in this area. She came to see and understand better what venomous snakes are like in the wild. That is how the milking video came to pass. The person doing the milking was my friend Pete Mimikos who has been keeping hots for about 25 years, so there were no amateurs at work here and everyong was safe.
The ribbon snake video I took and was one of the most astounding things I have ever seen. I went on a tour to the bottom of Seminole canyon to see the 12,000 year old shaman pictographs that are in the rock shelters up on the canyon walls. But at the bottom of the canyon were several pool, one of which contained about 30 baby, 8-10 juviniles and several adults. The pool was only about 15X10 and about 2ft. deep, but it had all those snakes and many frogs and tadpoles too. Please enjoy these videos. They are not my normal 90+ megabyte movies so they shouldn't take very long to download. The atrox milking video is about 13 megs and the ribbon snake video is about 20 megs. They are both well worth watching.
