Herp Trip - Hyde County, North Carolina Sept 11, 2004
Tonyhawkins and I went with a couple other people to Hyde County, NC to attempt to find some herps.... we did not have much luck. The weather was in the upper 70's and sprinkling rain the entire time. We saw little more than can be seen in the pics. A couple of amphibians, a spider with spiderlings, and a lot of black salamanders as they darted for cover. The only person that called the trip a success was Cory, Tony's girlfriend. She found a deer skull and jaw bones for one of her classes to study and an old glass Milk of Magnesia bottle. The bottle was in the bus in the last pic. We did have a good time and we have plenty of time to get to know each other in the two hour car ride down and three hour ride back :P Anywhooo.... here's the pics.....
A few frogs..... (corrected after John_White's information )
Some snake eggs we found... still had fluid inside but the eggs where hatchlings were no where to be found.
Here's Tony.....
The spider....
A cool old bus we found...

Great pics!
Too bad the weather did cooperate...
The top frog is a juvenile green treefrog, the second frog is a cricket frog (not a toad) the third frog is probably a squirrel or pine woods treefrog.

You are right about the working Ed! Even with wet feet and soggy clothes it was much better than a day at work! My wife thought I lost my mind when I told her some friends and I were meeting at 6AM on a Sat to drive two hours and walk through fields and woods
John, that was a frog, Wow!... that thing looked like a young toad. Coloring and warts too I obviously hadnt hit the VHS site and tried to identify anything yet. I learn something new every time I go out!
Here's a pic thats a little bit easier to see......

Brian... we hunted and hunted.... and looked all over and didn't come up with any snakes. Oh wait we saw one.... I left the group when we first got out there to ahhh water a tree, as I walked away I said "I am going to go scare up some snakes". Sure enough as I was walking along about 3' behind and 6' off to the side of me a milk took off out from under some debris and shot down a hole under some tree roots. One of the guys with us saw it from a distance and was not able to get there in time to catch it.
The temps were a little cool and the constant drizzle didnt make for a good day out there.
Hopefully next time we'll do better.

Seth was with us on Saturday. It must have been Tony and I that were the bad luck!
So we are heading up to Gloucester on Sunday then Tony?
