Field Report from the Weekend
Spent a good 12 hours in the field yesterday and found the following:
1 - Spotted Salamander (Ambystoma maculatum)
1 - Marbled Salamander (Ambystoma opacum)
2 - White-spotted Slimy Salamanders (Plethodon cylindraceus)
TMTC (to many to count) - Red-backed Salamanders (Plethodon cinereus)
3 - American Toads (Bufo americanus)
TMTC - Bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana)
TMTC - Green Frogs (Rana clamitans melanota)
TMTC - Southern Leopard Frogs (Rana sphenocephala)
8 - Spotted Turtles (Clemmys guttata)
1 - Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina serpentina)
3 - Eastern Painted Turtles (Chrysemys picta picta)
1- Northern Black Racer (Coluber constrictor constrictor)
13 - Eastern Ribbon Snakes (Thamnophis sauritus sauritus)
7 - Northern Water Snakes (Nerodia sipedon sipedon)
1 - Northern Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen)
The copperhead was found near one of my best mole king spots. The spot was an old farm property that I had herped for almost 20 years. However, yesterday I discovered that my old herping ground had been converted into a nice new townhouse development. With the sound of trucks and bulldozers in the air, I found a small island of remaining grassland. Within this small, soon to be bulldozed oasis I found a single sheet of remaining tin and under the tin was a fairly large (around 4 foot) copperhead. I brought the snake home and will either give it to a nature center or release it at one of my other spots (if that spot is still there).

That is very impressive! I've never even come close to finding such a variety of herps. Sorry to hear about the destruction of the field...In my opinion, there is WAY too much developmenting going on around here...everywhere i look there's a new neighborhood where woods used to be.

Sounds like an awesome day!
My sister and I went out for a couple of hours today in Raeford, NC and found a couple of salamaders, a toad, and three black racers.... nothing like your list!

Yes, it was a good day. I wish your sister would of been with me. If I remember correctly, the last time we went herpin, she out herped us all!
Do you know which species of toad and salamander(s) you found? Got any pics?

I am about 70% sure that the salamander we caught was a Slimy Salamander, Plethodon glutinosus. We didnt get any pics of it. The slime it excreted was nasty! I had to scrub the slime off of my hands with soap and a scrubbing sponge. Normal soap and water wouldnt touch it! The toad was a plain old run of the mill Fowler's Toad. We did get some decent pics of the racers though. I will get them posted tonight.
Heres a great resource that I came across trying to figure out what the salamander was....

Yep, that sounds like a slimy alright!
The Davidson site is a good reference. Dr. Mike Dorcas of Davidson has a couple new books coming out, a small snake book (field guide), similar to "Snakes of VA" and a more in-depth book on the herps of NC.
