What ARE these noises??
Well guys, the new dum that was so nippy she wouldn't let me hold her from about 3 or 4 days ago finally was calm enough to be held today. She was still very jumpy, but didn't bite me at all. Question is that before I thought she might have an RI because of moisture on snout and weird breathing. Well, having her out today I heard what was almost like a hiss (don't really know what that sounds like because none of mine hiss) but somewhat more passive. She also made some weird "darth vador" type clicking or popping noises every once and a while. Is this because she's scared or is there some sort of health problem? Also... just for info she is probably about 1 1/2 feet long and looks a little dehydrated... could have just been a bad last shed or is getting ready. I haven't had her long enough to catch the blue, I don't think. Thanks,
-East

Thanks guys... it's great to know that on a forum like this a post can sit for 24 hours without anyone touching it. I'll figure it out for myself I guess since chat doesn't work either.

Most of the time, a wheeze or crackling noise is associated with a RI in snakes. I would reccomend taking your snake to a qualified reptile vet. I am not famaliar enough with dumerals care and husbandry to give you too much better advice than that.
Good luck!
Morti.

Heh, some sounds are perfectly natural and normal for snakes.
An occasional click is nothing to worry with, standing alone, but if combined with snot, mucous, head up breathing, whistling, coughing, sneezing etc.. then nothing to really worry about.
Even the air sounds, seems to be normal breathing noises to me, unless coupled with the above, nothing to worry about either
But just for curiosity sakes, as Gilda asked, what are your temps etc at?

D'oh! I just found the other thread.
To me, it sounds like an RI. Raise your temps a degree or two, etc. It may just be that she needs to shed and the nose plugs are making the slight hissing noise. If her breathing doesn't get any better (continued wheezing, more popping noises, noticeable mucous), take her to a vet.

Hmmm.. dry looking?
Could be retained booger skin in the nostrils or loose skin in the nostrils making the noises you hear.
It happens sometimes.

from the topic title, i thought it was the thread about the PrivateMessage rattlesnake sound effect again and just never opened till now as it didn't appear to be anything urgent...something like "My Dumerils is making a noise. RI?.. as a title probably would have drawn attention faster ..Your snake sounds like it may be having resp issues probably from lack of humidity is my guess since he seems dehydrated. However, now you need to find out if it is an infection or just wheezing from dry air. Gonna need to see a vet to determine what to do next. Any advice you get will be guessing without doing a culture for a specific pathogen. And you either need to keep the humidity low awhile and treat an RI...or get it up and keep it up to keep it from happening again. But which way to go? Need a good vet to find this out.
