my baby redtail (3months) seems to spend all her time on the cooler side of the cage. she is in a 20 gal long with a human heat pad i keep on med. the coolest part of the cage is only 74-76. just wondering if this was some kind of preference or what? any ideas?

Hey ShoalinZ,
Yeah, its normal behavior foir snakes to do this at times, it's how they thermo-regulate their body temperature.
As long as there is a warm side, then all should be fine as it will go there when it wants to.
By the way, do you have a hide in both the warm and cool side? or just on one?

Mine will do the same thing, when he gets to cool then he goes to the warm side. Like eddie said have a hide on both sides.

yeah i understand te thermoregulation thing, but she seems to stay at the coldest part for such a long time. there are hides on both sides but she doesnt go in them, just lays on top of the one on the cold side. last night she climbed on top the hide on the cold side and curled up. i found her there this morning when i woke up.

Weeell what ya failed to state here is what the exact temps are in the hotter side of the cage. What are they? The temps could be the problem...IF they are too high on the hot side your snake will stay at the cool side. Also .. How exactly do you have the heat pad set up for her? Is it under the tank..in it ? .. wrapped in a towel or such....Would need more info in order to help you out better with your question...

Also..What is the exact temperature right on top of the heating pad also.
AND....IS the tank raised from the ground where it sits at all with something or is it just setting down with nothing to raise it from where it is sitting?

the cage is sitting on a dining room table right now. the heat pad is just sitting under about half the cage. the high end temps are 85-90. let me know if you need anything else.

My RTB has been doing the same thing, sitting on the cool side for the last week or so, it usually sits on the hot side all day, but for some reason it has stayed in the cool side. Temp havn't changed, 90-92 on the warm side and 80 on the cool side.

gee, maybe I am confused, but Ace, I think that might be a little too warm. Hmm, guess the snakes know better than we do after all. And we thought humans were so smart. All my snakes avoid 90 degree temps. Maybe mine are weird. (They must be, they're mine lol)

90 is a bit warm I would say, unless your dealing with a RI.
I know this doesnt apply to RTB, but I rarely see snakes out and about in the wild if temps are over 87 degrees.
I see the most between 68-79.
That seems to be when most snakes are active.

WITH ALL THAT SAID, I HAVE A QUESTION? TABOO IS IN HER HIDE OVER THE HEAT PAD FOR DAYS AFTER EATING. THEN WHEN I TAKE IT OFF OFF HER (ABOUT 1 1/2 WEEKS AFTER SHE EATS) AND HOLD HER............LOL........., SHE GOES DOWN TO THE HIDE ON THE COLD SIDE, (I FIGURED TO WAIT FOR MORE FOOD)? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? I KNOW, JUL'S WOULD SAY, "WANTIN' FOR ME!.... :lol"..BUT SERIOUSLY? WHY DOES SHE DO THAT? Taboo sits there for days thinkin, MAN I'm hot.... that other hide is lookin' really good right about now. then you get him up, and he thinks "might as well". haha Juggalo. I like your way of explaining that one.
Yeah Diane.. also it might figure that you found it under that hide so it moves to hide under the other one to hide from you.
