Bloated Ball Python
I was at a local pet store a few weeks ago and saw this pitiful looking little BP. He was bloated to the point that he was translucent, but not just regular bloating from food. He also has fluid under his skin. I thought he would have died by now, but when I went in for feeders today he was still in the back of his cage looking just at bad as before. So, me knowing the owners, asked them if I could take him home to give him a try.
He is in a horrible shed, but the fluid is not between the shed and new skin, it is under the skin.
Anyone ever see this before?
The history that I got is that he was doing a lot of soaking a couple weeks to a month ago.
He also has a touch of stomatitis.
I'm going to take him with me to work tomorrow and start him on antibiotics and probiotics will follow, but what are your thoughts?

Oh my...he looks in horrendous condition. I hope you'll be able to nurse him back to health.

edit: sorry, just re-read your post, last line.

Re: Bloated Ball Python
Just a tip here.
Obviously get him to a vet...and a good reptile vet at that.
Now I have worked with boa's in similar situations and I can tell you from experience that the best thing to do is leave them alone (after the vet visit). A reptile in this condition can die from stress very quickly.
Ball pythons can go a very long time without food....so don't try to stress the animal with eating unless the vet says so.
Good luck, I hope that little ball python makes it!!

Re: Bloated Ball Python
That I'm not sure. I'll give the store a call tomorrow. I work with some herp vets. Unfortunately, I will have to travel to the other hospital that we have to see one of them, but it isn't far.

Re: Bloated Ball Python
Does he feel bubbly, like air filled bloat or edemetous fluid-filled tissue-like?

Re: Bloated Ball Python
Thank you Shane. That I am aware of. He is in a warm dark place. So there is less stress.
I just hope he pulls through. If he wasn't so bloated, he would be skin and bones. His neck and tail is so skinny.

Yes, Keri.
Oh, one thing they said is that he looked like he had "bruising". I've seen that before and it was sepsis.

Re: Bloated Ball Python
Wow, I'm almost speechless! Never seen anything like that (happy to say...)???
I'd guess septicemia or congestive heart failure?, and it will take a miracle I think? That poor snake, I can't believe he is still alive! That's awesome, you are at least trying to help him!

Re: Bloated Ball Python
In a way I'm discussed to see him in that state of health.
I am hoping that he pulls though this.
Good luck to you, and thanks for taking the time to get him the help he needs.

Er, you mean "disgusted"? LOL...
But I agree...it's pathetic they were ignoring a snake in this condition!
I too hope he has many more 'Wakies' ahead of him!

Wakey wakey, poor little snakey.
Hope that, and everything you are trying to do for him, helps. Thanks for the efforts.

Re: Bloated Ball Python
Thanks everyone! The little guy is holding on and is acting a bit better. We don't think there is a good outlook for this guy. There isn't a lot of cases like this one.
So, we started him on Baytril(for 7 days) and gave him a dose of Metronidazole.
We also researched this problem and found that none make it from this.
But as long as he doesn't give up, I won't. He's strong and fiesty.

Re: Bloated Ball Python
Awww, poor little guy. At least he's in the best hands he could be in right now. I'm hoping against hope for the best. Did your research give any clues as to why he's bloated?
