another moving question...

I'll be moving to FL within the next month. Before I move, I'll be dropping most of my snakes off with a friend. I think I know the basics... they're not eating this week, its a 300 mile, one tank of gas trip so there wont be any stops along the way. I'll have the larger ones in pillow cases and my baby hognose in a deli cup (same one I brought her home in). A/C will be keeping them cool and they'll be transported off the floor to avoid excessive heat.

Before I go, I'll have to break down their cages for transport. My question is how long before I move can I break down the cages and put them in the pillow cases? I want the move to be as smooth and stress free as possible.

I'm trying to get them to Jacksonville tomorrow....will it be ok to prep them today? or should I just keep them in small tubs with water and a hide?

Am I missing anything?

Re: another moving question...

Byron,
I still think that you should at least put them in a Styrofoam cooler with some air holes. Bag them, but put them into the coolers as that is extra insurance. I just made a trip with a baby and it was a bugger to keep the container out of the sun with the car always coming and out of the sun. I was always having to switch positions for the deli cup, and I was worried that if i had to hit the brakes...stuff like that. I take the worst case scenario, and figure what happened if the car broke down...a traffic jam..accident? If they are at least in one of those cheap Styrofoam coolers it would protect them from the floorboard heat and the occasional sun hitting them.

Just saying...

Good luck..SS

Re: another moving question...

hmmm... friday afternoon, I-95 South headed to FL....yeah, traffic will be sort of heavy.

Yeah a cooler with maybe a single cold pack sounds like a pretty good idea. that way I wont have to worry about them freezing me out of the car trying to keep them cool.

There ya go. I have had success with my transports and never lost an animal yet. I know though how I would feel if I did loose one and sure would not wish that upon you.

Re: another moving question...

I use a styrofoam cooler for transport whenever I move anything live (that will fit in it of course) and just to be safe I throw a digital temp gauge in there so there is no guessing at temps
But I'm kind of anal-retentive, I lost a pair of rats bringing them back from the city on a hot day once and I don't want to repeat that experience

Re: another moving question...

I second what Sakara said, fine for a day or two, bagged & ready to go...they will snooze!

Also, use styrofoam/ice chests absolutely for sure don't think twice just do it....

Re: another moving question...

anyone volunteering to come disassemble my 2 cages while I pack? Out of all of the coolers I have, none are suitable for transporting snakes.

Oh well, another break from packing while I go shopping.

thanks for the quick replies.

Are you sure??? You can use a regular cooler! Just tape a tiny speed bump or two where it closes, so it allows a little crack for air. They do not need a whole lot.

yeah, because I'm sooo busy packing right now.

I have about 20 boxes stacked up in my living room, 2 in my kitchen and a few more scattered throughout my apartment. We wont even discuss my storage area or my garage. I hope to me mostly finished tonight....or not.

Re: another moving question...

I use moving as an opportunity to thin out the crap I don't need. I hate moving more than anyone. My goal in life is to do a "turn-key" move... turn in my key and walk away from everything and start over.
