kill me please
So today my son was bit on the lip by a baby carpet python. He is fine. My wife on the other hand is being absolutely rediculous. She is calling vets and doctors. Telling me i have to get rid of all my snakes or i have to leave. Even less helpful was the vet telling her some salivas can cause shock and that he needs antibiotics. I cant reason with her and i am definitely not getting rid of my collection because of this. I am obviously responsible and it was a freak accident from a snake he has held hundreds of times. Any advice on how to handle this? If ahe keeps talking about divorce she just might get her wish.

Re: kill me please
Give her time to cool down.
A small dog or cat could of caused a lot more damage to your son.
How old is your son?

Oh man, I'm so sorry. Just calmly tell her how bad a bite really is. Maybe even show her pics from members here and their reactions/thoughts.
good luck

My son is 5. She made it so much more traumatic by acting like a psycho. Now my son is going to be scared of snakes thanks to her.

Re: kill me please
walk away!!! let her have her little flip out moment and be irrational. my mother is the same way plus thinks she's always right and over reacts in the BIGGEST ways...
I know you have had problems in the past... if you wanna try to help y'alls relationship maybe try counseling? we have done a couple classes and plan to do counseling after deployment just to be safer then sorry lol. if she's still irrational, maybe it's best to walk away if that's what y'all want.
good luck Hun.

Oh geez....I'm sorry to hear this...I agree her reaction is gonna color how your son remembers this! Kids get injured...doesn't matter what you have or don't have, that is life! Your reaction to it makes it momentous or totally insignificant! I hope she cools down & gets rational....
Your vets/drs. are fueling the hysteria....(gee thanks all!!!)

Re: kill me please
Sounds like life to me... Lol.... you could go give your son a pep talk... and make him act like he likes them still... to where she will relax.
Or bribe him with ice cream or whatever... tell him to man up lol
good luck

Re: kill me please
I'd play along with the antibiotics to be on the safe side, btw, only since the lips are so vascular. Not to mention just about the most painful place to get bit, thanks to all the nerves!
I suppose it would be a no-no to induce a medical coma in your wife while your son heals?...(LOL! kidding...) I hope your luck improves and all this passes...

Re: kill me please
Wow that reminds me of an incident I had around 9 years ago.
I had a girlfriend over at my place along with a few of my friends and her friends. They always wanted me to take out the snakes. The girl I was dating at the time had been handling Twiggy (Twiggy was around 10 years old at the time) my Columbian Redtail. Twiggy was very docile, never bit anyone. In fact, she was raised on frozen rats and at that time she didn't even coil around the rats.
Twiggy took a bite at my girlfriends arm after being held for about 5 minutes. It wasn't a strike, just a straight up bite like she thought it was food. She did it right on her elbow. Of course chaos breaks out. The girls all freaked. I grabbed twiggy and put her back in the cage (along with the other 2 snakes we had out). My gf at the time was crying and had a very small amount of blood drawn (very very small amount). I tried to calm her down and she eventually stopped crying.
What I didn't notice was one of her friends called 911...10 minutes later I have 2 cops show up, firemen and an ambulance. I tried to assure them that the snake was not venomous, but they didn't hear me out. They rushed her to the hospital.
Of course her friends call my girlfriends mother. She is at the hospital freaking out. She comes out of the ER (they rushed her ahead of everyone) and starts screaming at me. I told her what happened and that this was no worse than a scratch (wrong thing to say). The Doctors were completely useless, they had no idea what to do. They were calling everyone trying to figure out what type of "Anti-venom" to give her. Seriously.
They grab me and ask the type of snake and I tell them a boa, and that its not venomous. They are on the phone with a specialist at the time, they relay that. He tells them the same, and says to clean the wound and put a topical on it...nothing more.
Needless to say I had to help pay for that half of that hospital bill since her mother had no insurance. Cost me a arm and a leg. After that, only a few people were allowed to handle my snakes. In fact, I had major issues with that girlfriend after that...she kept asking to hold twiggy and I said no way.

Re: kill me please
OMG Shane, how traumatic for all involved!!! I'd have been wondering when I was gonna wake up from the nightmare...? Tks for sharing that! Esp. for those keeping giant snakes, it really helps to see how fast things can go horribly wrong from nothing!

Re: kill me please
some ppl are ridiculous when it comes to that kind of thing -__- I'd be more worried about getting a cat scratch then a non-venomous snake bite... I've had cat scratches get infected pretty badly, never a snake bite get infected...

I agree! Cats carry lots of germs on their claws (and teeth)! I have yet to get a snake bite infected, and honestly that includes a couple venomoid fangs too! Most of the time I pay no attention as far as topical antiseptic and bandaging the 'wound'....(not a recommendation mind you, just saying...)
It's not the wound here...it's the snake hysteria 'talking'!

Re: kill me please
That sucks duder...best wishes with all that...people usually need time to calm down...especially the most of female persuation, who have a tendancy to react emotionally, especially when their spawn is what they perceive as hurt...no offense all...just remember, with irrational folks, it always best to remain calm.

Re: kill me please
Does anyone else have a spouse who is intent on them not having snakes? I seriously could see this being the final straw in our marriage.

Re: kill me please
Just try to keep calm and be nice to your wife. Give her some roses.
Tell your son how brave and strong he is and show him some other snake bite pictures that other people got. Tell him he is like Steve Irwin.
Good luck!!!
