Western or Easter Hognoses good beginner snakes???
I forgot to post this in the KSB thread sry xD
So ummmm yeah I've seen a couple of hognosed snakes on the market and one on craigslist. Are they considered good snakes for beginners? I hear they never bite unless you smell like prey. But are they venomous? They have the fangs but ive also heard that the venom isn't active in humans and is harmless? Also are their temperments good? How big do they normally grow?

Re: Western or Easter Hognoses good beginner snakes???
American hognose snakes bites are rare and medically insignificant to the general population.

Re: Western or Easter Hognoses good beginner snakes???
Western hognose are much better suited to newer snake keepers.
Easterns have fairly specific dietary needs, and some may take rodents, they don't always thrive on them.

Re: Western or Easter Hognoses good beginner snakes???
As telefrag said...and Western hognose stay fairly small, taking a diet of small prekilled mice pretty well...not considered dangerous as far as the bite (unless you have an unusual response for some reason, ie. 'allergy'...) They are cuties! Be sure to get them from a reliable breeder who has started them on rodents.
