My python just swallowed a puppy pad....
I'm not a beginner but I'm not sure where to post this. My dad decided to feed my 6 ft blood python three mice as a snack while I was sleeping, and one got tangled in a puppy pad (I line his tank with them.. I have no idea how he pulled this off). He put up a good fight. I pried his jaw open but he wouldn't give it back. Eventually I gave up and let go because it was stuck on his teeth. We managed to cut it and he only got a decent chunk, but I'm still worried.
They are OUT! Moisture Lock Training Pads. I called the company but they're closed, and their message said to call some chemical company. The guy had no idea what the heck I was talking about and told me to call Animal Poison Control... They want $65 just to answer my question!!! HA! I then called the local vet that deals with exotics, but another clinic was the one on call for the weekend.. They don't deal with snakes so they aren't sure what it will do to him.
So I'm just wondering if anyone knows if there's any chemicals I should be worried about (used to absorb the pee), or if it would get caught in his digestive system.. I know this is ridiculous haha. Thanks in advance.

Re: My python just swallowed a puppy pad....
Honestly there shouldn't have been puppy pads in a snake cage to begin with. Now for the problem you can wait for to try and poop which may not work force a regurgitation which may prove to stressful or take him to a vet and have them surgically remove it which someone had done to a burm who swallowed an electric heat pad your choice.

Eeek. I know a lot of people around here who use puppy pads and they say it's fine.. but snakes don't typically end up ingesting them! I guess I'm going to wait for him to poop! I don't want him to have to deal with the other two options.

Re: My python just swallowed a puppy pad....
There's plenty of substrates out there and puppy pads are not one of them.May i also add if you are using puppy pads you're still a beginner no offense.

Re: My python just swallowed a puppy pad....
I would suggest newspaper or paper towels if you want to go with a simple/cheap substrate. If I were you, I'd take the snake to a vet as soon as you could just to check things out.

Re: My python just swallowed a puppy pad....
I would say get your snake to the vet ASAP.
We require a little more info:
what brand of puppy pad are you using?

Re: My python just swallowed a puppy pad....
I have never in my life heard of anyone using puppy pads as substrate......I can't even fathom where that idea would come from or why it even sounds remotely like a good idea.

Honestly he could pass away before this happens the last option is your best one take it to a vet and go from there.

Maybe they thought it would be absorbent & easy enough to clean?

Re: My python just swallowed a puppy pad....
Yeah I'm going to see if I can get an appointment with the vet tomorrow just to be safe. And they're OUT! Moisture Lock Training Pads. Maybe its a Canadian thing LOL but 90% of snake owners I've met around here use puppy pads. They're great, convenient, and I haven't had any problems until today.

I'm mostly worried about the "Antimicrobial odor neutralizers help keeps your home smelling fresh" and "Powerful attractant draws pets directly to pad".. But I can't find what exactly those would be.

Re: My python just swallowed a puppy pad....
I got a idea if you don't have any advise on how to help the guy stay out of here insted of telling him that using puppy pads is a bad idea there is pleantybof time for that in the future altho I'm sure they have figured it out buy now
Try helping the snake stay alive then tell him how to correct the husbandry problems

That advice has already been offered now people are just trying to make sure a correct substrate is used. Also you might want to seriously consider a lock to keep people out of his cage hope he pulls through for you.

Yeah my dad won't be feeding him again that's for sure. He meant well but he left the room and didn't make sure my snake was good to go.. he panicked and woke me up to get it out of his mouth. I hope he plans on paying the $400 vet bill! ha

Re: My python just swallowed a puppy pad....
Wow...this is a new one... honestly, I am thinking a vet might be overkill but at the same time if something does go wrong with it all it is going to be extremely bad such as a blockage or something....
I would point out though that getting ticked at the guy you talked to wouldn't be warrented seeing how I doubt that the lab tested pee pads on bloods. Good luck, get some aspen or something is the best advice I can tell you other than you might want to be safer than sorry and head to a vet, but good luck on a Sunday unless you got an emergency hospital around who does exotics. Hope it all turns out for you.

Yeah there's only one vet who deals with exotics so I have to wait until tomorrow. I hope nothing goes wrong overnight, but I don't think it will. I just wish someone knew what the chemicals are!
I was only mad because the guy didn't even know what puppy pads are lol. I read the package to him and he still went 'uhhhhh'.. Even though the company's answering machine said to call them! But oh well. Thanks guys!

Re: My python just swallowed a puppy pad....
The super absorbant polymer used in diapers is sodium polyacrylate. I *assume* this is also used in puppy pads.
Here's a safety sheet for sodium polyacrylate (lists an emergency phone number):
http://www.hmsmedical.com/images/44-OC%20MSDS.pdf
Hope this helps!
