Re: What is a good substrate for a boamaster cage
I use newspaper because it's a LOT easier... but if you want another substrate, aspen bedding is good... cypress mulch is also good
I have over 40 snakes, so clean up is MUCH easier with newspaper, LOL!

Re: What is a good substrate for a boamaster cage
All told, my 6-footer cost me over $800. That's with all accessories, cage-decor / substrate and my Herpstat.
I'd say you've got a pretty good deal.
As for substrate, I use a soil-mix called Jungle Bed by T-Rex in most of my permanent cages and aspen in my semi-permanent, quarantine setups, Desert Snow (also by T-Rex) in my Kings' enclosures.
Costs me $100 for 15 10qt bags of Jungle Bed, T-Rex Aspen's $4.00 per 10qt bag. I make a point to only buy from them and avoid commercial sellers. Just my preference.
...And for the record, I've twice as many snakes as you, it seems, and despite the work involved, haven't in the years I've had them, nor ever intend to use newspaper.
It's all personal preference.

Re: What is a good substrate for a boamaster cage
But one very large state Sakara!
I'm with AG, mulch FTW! I get eukalyptus mulch from Lowe's and one bag at about $3 does a 6 foot cage. It took me about 2-3 hours or so to clean all my cages (25 snakes) when I had them. I like the look of it and gives them more surface area to crawl around on.
It's all personal preference, you have to decide what you like.
